Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) rebuild and break-in

I should get my truck back from getting the engine rebuilt, I was wondering what how I should go about the break-in. I was just going to drive normal without any towing for the first 300 miles or so then, I was planning on pulling whatever I wanted. I do pull our skid steer alot, and it and the truck should gross around 16,000, is this to much with only 300 miles on the the rebuild or will that be ok? From what I understand these things are made to work so I might as well work it.

For the first 1000 miles, Don't use the cruise. Vary the speed and load of the engine. I would go light on the throtle long enough to bleed the air out of the fuel lines. The best thing you can do for those cylender walls and rings is to load up that skid steer and head down the road. If you had an Ag tractor I'd tell you to sink the biggest plow in the ground you could drag and run it for 10 hours.



Just watch your oil cunsumption. You should use a little more oil than normal at first.

Who did your rebuild? What do they say about breakin?

Scheid diesel is doing the rebuild, I will ask them about it when I pick it up, hopefully Friday. thanks for the replys

I'v always broke in a new engine and equipment the way I am going to run it all the time. If you are going to haul and pull heavy than brake it in that way. I'v alwasy broke in the engines in my rigs the same way, and never had a problem.

I'll 2nd and 3rd the comments on "load it up" and go.



The rings need to be seated in thoroughly. And to do that, they need a high pressure load on them. Driving light and easy will glaze the cylinder walls and rings. If you let that happen, it will tens of thousands of miles before the rings seat properly. Maybe never. I have seen the results of breaking it in easy. Lots of oil blowby, not good.

So what are you doing about your break in? What did Scheid and/or Cummins reccomend?

I still haven't got it back yet, they are waiting on the head still. I was in there a couple of days ago and it was all together except for the head. they said after they get the head on it, it will take about 8 hrs to get it back in and done, should be tuesday or wednesday of next week they said. Its been almost 6 weeks that they have had the truck although alot of the time has been troubleshooting and waiting on parts.
