I came across a good deal on a he351ve. It's going on our 24 valve along with a Fleece controller. It seems that the shaft is hard to turn and there is excessive play in the shaft. The guy I got it from said the truck only had 30,000 miles and was smoking like crazy, so the dealer was just throwing parts at it, but it ended up being a cracked head next to an oil gallery??? Somehow he got to keep the old turbo, which I thought was odd. Anyways, I think I should at least tear it apart and maybe rebuild it since I have next to nothing in it. I can't find a rebuild kit, and was wondering if anyone else has done this. Thanks

I know our local injection shop has done some Holset VGTs so maybe check with a Holset shop in your area.

Just about any shop that rebuilds turbos can get a kit for you. You just have to have the model and serial # handy. They come apart pretty easy and shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
There is also the eBay option for parts or even a complete working turbo for $300 or less.

I dissasembled mine to check for a sticking swipe ring and for bearing wear. The VGT control module is VERY sensative to position so you must be precise during reassembly. If I remember correctly, only Dodge service could recalibrate if out of position and the turbo rebuilders told me that the turbo module could only be tested through the data link while installed on the vehicle. I reinstalled my turbo and luckily I had put it back together correctly... The local Cummins shop told me that they wouldn't even attempt trying to diagnose the turbo while out of the truck.
