I'm going to be yanking my transmission out in the near future for a Goerend or ATS rebuild.

My truck has 110,000 miles, so I'm wondering if I should tear the transfer case apart and rebuild it while the transmission is out? Or can I just check things out without opening it? Things like bearing feel, chain stretch, etc?

I've rebuilt gear-driven transfer cases, but not chain-driven ones.

Thanks for your recommendations!

Blakers, my feeling is don't fix something that isn't broke or about to break. Sure you should check it out from the outside, but I wouldn't tear into it. After all it isn't all that hard to drop it later if needed.

Thanks illflem, for the advise.

I'll change the oil in it and look it over without tearing into it. Rock shafts back and forth to determine chain slop, etc.

What about the shim or bushing that has been talked about going bad in these? It is the HD unit.

Take care,

Blake;)
