Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Rebuild transmission for Christmas

My Christmas eve started offf bad I was hooking up my trailer and the transmission started to make a weird noise I went to pull up and it was stuck in fifth gear but the stick will move so I called my budy got my flatbed hooked up put my truck in 4 low got in on the trailer and made the embarressing trip to the transmission shop being pulled by a ford :{ . It has been an all out bad day. What might have gone wrong if this has happened to any of you.

Sounds like broken shifting forks or the shift lever itself is broken if the stick moves and the transmission stays in 5th.
