ok here is my deal i have a 89 4x4 srw 350 cummins with 727 transmission and 3. 08 gears... the stock convertor is too loose, and my transmission is slipping a little i think. I want to rebuild it to hold ALOT of power. as I am soon swapping to a p7100 pump with 370 injectors, enterprise delivery valves, and a #4 cam plate, amnd i'm working on a set of twin turbos... . no im doing this on a backyard budget and doing all the fabbing and work my self. I do not have the $ for a newer 47h transmission so thats out of the ?. . and the 727 is strong enough when built o hold alot of power. . ie hemis and lots of 440s use them also... . and its cheaper.

so the question is who's torque convertor do i use?... what price?. . and what transmission kit to i use to rebuild it?. . do i do a full manaul valve body? reverse shift pattern?. . etc i want to do this relatively soon... any ideas?. . ps i do like the 3. 08 gears. . and a non overdrive set is fine by me as i will be running a 4000 plus gov spring set. . and my racing deisel truck uses 3. 00 gears and a allison 3 spd no overdrive and just over 4000 rpm in a 6v53 and this runs 12 flat and possible 11's...

ok where do i get the convertor ?

where do i get the transmission kit?...

and what are your options?

thanks

Rebuilt a lot of 727s in my days. You are correct, it is a tuff old girl. Easy to rebuild. Not sure who would have the best choise for converter but be careful. Stall speed will be a big factor. I am not shure where it would be for your diesel and horse power, but this will determine weather you love the mod or hate it. As far as a full manual valve body, you do what you think you would like. Myself, I never liked manual. You can always shift manualy with an auto setup but can not go the other way. You will be raising the internal pressure of the unit either way to help hold the clutch packs tighter. The detent pressure will be critical for drivability. The rebuild kit can be purchase in a wide range of qualities. I recomend you spend the extra to by a kit with name brand friction materials. They do make friction plates for race application. The ones we use were red in color and when the shift happened with the pressure boosted it happened NOW. But remember that you have to want this. The shift under normal conditions (your foot not stuck to the floor) will be very firm, almost harsh. Hope you have fun with your project. Good luck

He is right. Just read a great post on trannys in the 1st gen from a day or so ago about converters. Can't go wrong with expert advice even if you are doing the work yourself.

well before i posted i called Bill K and he told me he doesn't offer any thing for my application pretty much ... he doesn't deal much with the 727... he rcommended the overdrive transmission and to switch my rear end ratio. . well i don't have the $ to do a dtt transmission upgrade and the rear gear is one of the things i like the best in fact i would probably leave the 3:08s in if i upgraded to a 47h... . basically bill recommended that i call Dave Goerands and the # he gave me , which also matches the # in the tdr, is not working right so i couldn't take to Dave yet... Bill said don't do 1st gear burnouts with the 727 it will blow up ... do em in 2nd gear... and don't get a transmission rebuild kit from jegs or summit... ha

any more ideas guys thanks

hey what do you think about trying the type F transmission fluid in my 727 to firm it up?... instead of the dex III

I would call Niel Chance Racing converters. They made one for my Hemi. They build exactely what they claim, I don't know if they do diesels though. I would personally run a Manual VB. Also install a bolt in sprag and you don't have to worry about a broken transmission after a burnout. One more thing, if you don't have a 5 clutch front drum it would be better to have one.

thanks do you have a contact # for them? waht do you think about a trans brake ?. . spool up on boost launch etc?. . probably break more things. . who makes a better flewplate?. . i know a freind whos truck is not turned up much at all who has already done 3 flex plates but he has 518 . .

later

I will see if I can find a Number for them. As for a T brake I doubt if you really need one unless you just want one for roll control. I would check with one of the shops specializing in the 47RH/RE trans to see if they offer a better plate. When you have the plate tell the converter builder you need that flex plate pattern on the front cover.

You might call these people also. I have used a couple of their converters. They work good. I have also used one of their complete trans also. It has been on the street for 10 years now with a 3,000 stall converter in it. It is in a 78 C10 with a warmed up SBC. This truck is driven every day also.

I don't know if they do diesel converters. But they build their on converters. So it might be worth checking out.
