How hard is it to rebuild a turbo I bought a hx 40 and a ht3b off of ebay and would like to clean and overhaul them before I start to build my twins thanks

did one each some years ago on a john deere 450 and cat 977. the actual dissassembly and reassembly is relatively straight forward. cleanliness is very important.

the big deal is rebalancing the assembly - you need a good turbo shop to get that done. the company i worked for took care of that. not sure who did it.

i have my trucks factory turbo sitting in a box, waiting to get some bearings and put it together. i am hoping to find a place that will balance it for me.

hope this helps

You could always send the Turbos out to any of the reputable Diesel Shops or even to a Turbo Builder for a rebuild-*updates* and presision balancing... . That way you wouldnt have to second guess anything? If the turbo coughs and your engine ingests some shrapnel from the turbo you won't be a happy camper.....

Just my . 02 cents... ... ...

you don't need to rebalance them if they were already balanced... they are not dynamicly balanced or indexed... each wheel is individually balanced, and they can go back together any way.

that's good to hear forrest.

i was concerned because the nut itself has been relieved and i figured it was done as an assembly. so not to worry then?

If the turbo rotating assy. (comp. wheel & turbine wheel) has not contacted the housings then you might be ok for balance. How ever if material has gone through either side, thats a problem. Some times etching can occur and that will be a problem with balance. Your bigger problem maybe measuring to 2 10ths of . 001 inch that will determine if your clearances are correct and in spec. Like the bearing bore, seal areas, bearings and shaft. Any wear lines of any signifacance is bad and will either be replaced or ground to undersize or oversize. GOOD LUCK!
