I wouldn't touch a recap with a 10ft pole. Big truck, or not. The potential damage caused by a bad tire will offset any savings.

It is illegal to run a cap on the steer tires anyways.

As the saying goes, "Pay me now, or pay me later. " Pay me now will be cheaper in the long run.

I had a set of recaps a few years back on the rear wheels. Won't do that again, when they let go they let go big time. I heard a loud pop then the truck started shaking and bouncing violently as tire pieces flew everywhere. You also have to consider having possible damage to your under carriage and fender wells when they let go.

Their is a big difference between certified recap tires and a joe shmow recap tire. Our company runs nothing but recaps front and rear which are certified, 20 years no problems yet.

I don't care how many certificates a recap has, I still won't have them on my truck, car or lawn mower. I had an experience with them, many years ago, that almost cost me my life. If it sounds like I'm bitter about recaps, I am.

To see any savings, you need to use your casings and the value of a 16" tire casing is ?. Once you get in the commercial size, 19. 5 and up there is some value in the casing. UPS uses them on the rear of their vehicles.

When I was running log trucks, we used them a-lot. However it was mostly off highway. They save money if ya don't buy casing and all. There always seemed to be some waste tho, you have to watch your tires real close and pull them off with some tread left or when they buff the tread off there will be unseen damage and they will cull the case. Sometimes it would pay to just put them on the trailers (when the tread was low) and run them till there was nothing left.

Exactally. Everyone here needs to keep in mind that a cap DOES NOT have cords. So just about every "blown cap" you have seen on the hwy was not a cap failure, it was a casing failure which can and does happen on new "virgin" tires. We've used caps for at least 20 years with only a few failures which are just about on par with the number of new failures we've had.

The tire shop we use has very strict rules on what they'll cap. On a rare occasion I send them a tire that doesn't pass inspection (too old, broken cords, too many repairs) they'll tag it and send it back. I've sold the tagged casings to local farmers who thought they new better and had them capped at another discount tire shop. Even after I've warned them they do it anyway and have torn up some nice equipment. Caps are not for everyone, if it was a personal vehical that doesn't see many miles I wouldn't do it because the cost benefit isn't there. But if it's a vehicle that really burns up tires go for it, but just like any tire keep an eye on them and watch the air pressure.

I ended up buying 6 RECAPS from sd again. With the savings even with some damage I still come out ahead. I have had 2 blowouts in the past years. But both where casing failers and not tread seperation.

Also did you know one of the bigest uses of recaps is on airplanes:-laf
