10yr/100,000mile paint warranty letter!

Yesterday amongst my stack of bills was a nice letter from DC stating that my paint warranty has been extended from 3yrs/36K miles to 10yrs/100K miles.

The reason for the extension has to do with paint separation/adhesion problems caused by a primer issue, so this sounds like they're not addressing how easily the paint scratches or chips. But it's some extra peace of mind. I wonder if all '03 owners will be given the extension, or only certain colors?

Did they just send you that out of the blue, or did you complain and talk to DC about your paint?

I've noticed my paint chips very easily. I went a week w/o mudflaps and the back rockers are all chipped to hell.

It just showed up in the mail. No complaints registered, although I plan to for the ease of chipping and scratching.

You can do a search for others posts, I have mentioned several times in the forums of how easily my rockers were being chipped. This forced me to install mudflaps, which I hated to do, but felt I had no alternative.

3M makes a clear film that you can put on "vulnerable" areas of your vehicle to protect the paint. It seems I would need to cover the entire truck to protect this soft paint/clearcoat combo.

As stated in my original post, the letter says that the extended coverage does not cover rock chips or scratches (nor does the standard warranty). I believe the paint is not acceptable and something should be done by DC to resolve the problem (i. e. more layers of clear, thicker paint, not using a white primer under dark colors, etc. ).

BTW, my truck was built and painted in Mexico, which I have heard has better paint than St. Louis trucks, that's scary.

In my signature... it's Patriot Blue, which seems to be one of or perhaps THE problem color. Unfortunately, it's the only color I wanted.

I'll keep my eyes out for one of those letter mine is PB built in Mex in May unfortunaelty it is not the color I wanted the wife wanted this color.

Got mine also

I've never heard (from anyone that wasnt speculating or fretting) that this has anything to do with color, now or back in March/April. The wording in the extended warranty reads in a manner that implies that ALL 2003 2500's, 3500's are going to be covered.

i want a new paint job or new truck! (with picture)

the letter for me (i haven't gotten it yet ) will support my case if i have to go to arbitration. my service writer has already said chrysler will pay for the paint to be fixed. today i noticed a new big chunk of paint in the bed were some wood got pinched while closing the tailgate. no way is this going to last 100k or ten years.

i have 50 pictures each of different problems with the paint.

Friday i am going to a body shop that handles disputes with insurance company's and are advocates for the customer.

will post as developments occur.

I just hope it doesn't come off in huge chunks

I sure love the paint jobs on my 95 and 2002 Saturn's now they know how to paint cars..... even the Saturn's in the wrecking yards look good.

I have a buffer but I am afraid to use it on the truck if the paint is as thin as you guys say it would end up looking like a blue Dalmatian. :D

I got a letter too. Just wish DC had done this in the first place instead of placing a QC hold on my truck for 6 weeks for the same issue last spring!

We buy the 3m paint protector for other uses, and I am going to coat my truck to protect it soon. Not a good paint job at all. I am glad to hear about the warranty letter, we will be awaiting ours. It has already been partially painted once, for improper factory painting, and I expect it will be back in a year or two for more.

Yep, I got my letter today and it specifies my VIN. My truck is white and was built in early March '03 and I finally got delivery on May 15th after it set in the rail yard on hold all that time.

I got mine yesterday. My truck is white and was built in mid February. It was not held up for shipment and I took delivery in mid March.

Hope the paint holds up.

as a dealer, I was told color was of little issue, timing was the issue, and darn-it, i got a letter too, but i was assured that my truck was not effected, but i was in the time frame, and thats why I got the letter!

hmm, no matter, still not happy to know at the 100,100 mile, the paint mayalls off and is all me, and my pocketbook

Mine is white and chips have started appearing on the left dually fender at the top right along where it mates with the bed, and big chips on the tailgate right above the handle. Bad things is, I have 198,000+ on the truck. :{

From what I can tell it does not have much to do with color. It has more to do with the time the vehicle was built, and appears to be early spring builds. Sounds like PPG is on the hook for the repair if the paint falls off. They tested most units before they let them go to the dealer, hence the delay some people experienced. If ANY paint blew off with a pressure washer the truck was not allowed to be sold as new. The warranty appears to be a little added insurance, and the letters are VIN specific.

This makes me mad. I bought mine before the first of the year, took delivery on 12-31-02. I have the Patriot Blue and it chips and scratches easily. I complained to the Dodge dealer about it and I guess I don't get the paint warranty you guys are getting.

You may very well get it. It takes them a while sometimes to send stuff like that out. They do it in groups etc. Like recalls. They don't and can't flood it all out at once. You can also call 18009921997 and ask if yours is involved and or what vin numbers to what vin numbers are affected. Also make sure with customer service(not dealer)that they have correct address etc. That sometimes also holds up things. Just some advise.
