History of bad injector pumps

I too am unhappy with CTD 04. 5 mileage (15-16 mpg, driving like a grandmother (with an egg between the RF and throttle) with 3:73's/48RE, no towing, box stock, 50/50 hwy/city. In fact, my CTD has not seen 3000 RPM. Reading many posts, there are CTD owners with bombed trucks allegedly getting 20 mpg with 400+ hp at the rear wheels. It seems pretty clear that factory injectors are inefficient, unreliable (scores of posts about #5 injector) and can easily be replaced with aftermarket EDM's etc etc. I am not interested in huge HP, just improved mileage; I can tow my 6000# boat with ease and don't need the xtra HP. Are we just talking JUST injectors or injectors with electronic enhancements (TFT, Banks etc. ) for improved mileage? Any recommendations?

As far as I know, there are no magic injectors that will yield any noticable increase. You might try the TSB 18-037-04 for poor fuel mileage. Many have had it done and have been impressed. Some have not been happy with the TSB. It is a reflash of the trucks ECM to try and improve mileage. Do a search and you can find info.

I have not had the flash, so I can't give any personal testimony.

A lot of people with performance boxes look at the overhead for their MPG and it shows 20-24. That is wrong in most cases the box confuses the computer. Not to say it can't be achieved. Before I put on the 315's I could get 20 hand figured with the Edge EZ. But if you keep you foot in it it goes down quick. Obviously the more HP you have the more fuel you are going to use to achieve it which = less HP. I guess my point is don't get you hopes up about getting improved mileage with a performance product because in my opinion if very rarely happens. Flame suit on because I know a lot of people will disagree.

DiMarco, if you drive like a granny all the time, ultimately you won't get great mileage because of not loading the engine enough and allowing deposits and carbon buildup. I would strongly recommend a good fuel conditioner such as Stanadyne or Howes which will help MPG and keep the injector tips & combustion chamber cleaner.

I don't know how often you tow but if you run easy more than 1 or 2 tanks at a time it would do a lot of good to get on it hard and rap it out to redline or go full throttle onto the highway at least a couple three times per tank. I get better mileage driving like that than going totally easy the entire tank.

F1 diesel (Don M) has seen mileage improovents in the prototype EDM injector nozzles he's been testing. At this point they are not available to the public and he makes no mileage improovment guarantees. A honed stock injector as most places sell will not show a significant mileage improovment.

Wht will show better mileage is a fueling box that increases timing. My TST gave me an extra 2 mpg upon install. Other boxes of this type currently available are the Edge Juice, bullydog downloader and Quadzilla downloader. The two downloader do not give you the adjustment and also do not give you the option of a timing only setting as the TST and I believe Edge do.

DDiMarco,

I had the flash done today @ 11,600 miles and have only driven my truck about 15 miles (home from dealer) since.

My overhead normally ran within . 1 to . 2 MPG from hand calculated and the best mileage I've gotten was on a trip from CA to OK, 16. 2 MPG/HC for 1400 miles.

On the way home from the dealer today my overhead was showing 17. 9 (reset @ dealer). I have no idea how accurate this will turn out to be, but the motor sounds very different. It really has much more "clatter" now and I am wondering if the TSB removed the third injection event:rolleyes:

My truck is bone stock and I was going to remove the muffler and install the BHAF tomorrow, but now I think that I may wait for a while to get an accurate mileage figure.

15-16 mpg with 50/50 highway/city driving is pretty good. I do about 85 highway and 15 city and average right at 18. I wouldn't mess with it.

DD I also would say 15-16 mpg is not bad for the 50/50 driving. I drive similar type an I'll see 16-16. 5 mpg. Now if it's more city it will drop to about 15mpg. This is still a plus because my gasser 4x4 3/4 truck I traded in less weight only got 11mpg 50/50 driving an a whopping 13mpg interstate driving 60 to 65 mph.

I also believe were your seeing people getting the higher mileage is the type enviroment there in along with a longer distance to travel. I here lately have been going a longer distance than my routine type of driving (10 miles to work) an noticed my mileage increased. Short distances an stop, start, go, will affect the mileage alot.

I also second what Vaughn said, if your not towing much, take it out some where remote an get it up to temp an blow it out. I don't drive it like I stole it all the time, but usually every couple weeks will blow it out. Been doing this since I bought it new. :D

I have 15000 miles now. Had the TSB around 9000. TSB did not change anything except the overhead reading. I wish I could average 15-16mpg 50/50 driving. I average about 14 50/50 at best and that is after I started using Power Service Kleen every tank.

I did get 18. 9 (hand calculated) on my last trip to Kentucky. This ofcourse was all interstate with the edge on high. I usually get around 15 with 50/50.

Look at the bright side - you have a 7,000lb truck that can tow a school and get 15 mpg - not bad I would say.
