The Red brake warning light has come on all by itself while driving down the road today. It had come on about a week ago while I was driving down the road, not using brakes. It went off after about 15 min last time, this time it has stayed on and I can not make it go off. Only the RED Brake Warning light is on and the Yellow ABS light is off. Brake lights work, Light is steady not flashing, checked Power steering fluid... it is good, brake fluid level is good, and combination valve is good (rod moves). I don't know what else to check. What should I look for next? Truck is a 4 wheel disk, 4 wheel abs truck build july 00. Yes 00 not 01... . I can't figure it out

Have you checked wiring connectors?

How's the brake pads? Is the emergency brake released all the way?

I have driven off with the emergency brake on & that would wear out the small set of pads inside the rear rotor.

Good Luck,

Troy

As Silver Ram suggested, you should check the electrical wiring, especially right below the master cylinder and brake manifold. Remove the connectors and look for moisture or corrosion. Keeping your truck clean under the hood is not a friendly activity for these connectors. On my '96, I had a similar problem and that's what I found to be the cause.

Have you checked that your ABS is working? I know you said the light was not on, but you should check that ABS activates if you brake hard.

Finally, that brake light stays on until the vacuum pump gets to the proper vacuum. You should probably look at all your vacuum hoses and ensure you don't have a leak that is just enough to cause the light to come on.

Good luck,

Brake Light Switch

So I took the brake light switch off the truck to test it and I noticed a molded print on the side that says "DO NOT RE-INSTALL" CRAP!!! So I called the dodge dealer, "oh yeah those are a one time deal. Once you take them off they won't work anymore... . they are self adjusting" Great so now I am off to the dealer to get my $13 brake light switch.

Fixed

The brake light switch was the problem :) By the time I got to the dealers it was a $11 switch. Replaced and calibrated via instructions that came with new switch and turned truck on. Light was still lit untill I depressed the brake and then it went out.
