My local refueling station just started selling RED Diesel Fuel. There's a label on the pump "For off road use only" How is this different from Diesel #2? What is the fine in California for using it? Not that I would use it of course, I'm just curious as I have never heard of RED Diesel Fuel. By the way, how would anyone know you are using it on the road. Do they have Diesel pickup police running around that I have not seen yet? Does the RED fuel stain the filter/line innards so that the feds can tell you've been using it? Is this something they actually test the big rigs for? I used to work at the TTT truck stop in Tucson some time ago. I think Diesel was something like 34 cents a gallon back then, it's about a buck fifty in San Jose, ca.

Whell, just gots to shoot off my typing... .
Red fuel is a "no-tax" fuel for off road. It will leave a trace in the tank and lines FOREVER. If caught using on road, some states will impound said vehicle and fine ya besides the jail term. From the reading I've done, Texas does check p/u's. Most states will probably check if stopped for another reason. So is the no tax fuel worth it??? Only u can answer that, just like being your own warranty station.

DEFINATELY not worth it. They can test the fuel and even if you ran it a long time ago it'll show up. One of my wife's uncles ran off-road fuel in his truck (he's a farmer so it was for his tractors). Well, one day when he pulled out of his field in his truck he got pulled over, they tested the fuel - and handed him a ticket for $10,000!!!!!!! OUCH

I live in Arkansas and up until about 1993, we could buy an annual flat fee sticker for $75 and run the red diesel in our pickups. I did it primarily for the convenience of being able to fill out of the farm tanks without going into town for fuel. Plus, I have an aux tank with a hand pump on it to fuel tractors in the field and it was handy if I ran low in the truck. At $75 per year, the state collected more from me than at the pump, but I did'nt care because of the convenience. Also, I got to burn the high sulphur fuel. I must admit that the truck I owned then was a Ferd and whoever owns it today will have the red dye traces in their system if it is ever checked. I wish the government would go back to allowing us to pay some sort of flat fee or per mile fee and allow us to burn the red diesel when we wanted. I do know that the DOT checks trucks for this periodically and usually finds several violators. Seems farmers, loggers, construction people and those who have off road fuel available are the worst offenders. I have heard that if you get caught they impose very serious big dollar fines. Everyone seems to agree with me that the risk is not worth the savings.
