Red Diesel,Yes or No?

WILL BURNING RED(FARM USE) DIESEL DAMAGE MY NEW CUMMINS HO? IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE IN IT AND REGULAR DIESEL

Shouldnt hurt it but the fines are pretty stiff

Try it, your truck will like it.

I dont think it will hurt anything, but you should run a good conditioner in it while running red.

My truck smoked quite a bit more, the conditioner helps.

Won't harm anything, depending upon the area you live in, red and clear fuel are the same. In most areas high sulfur fuel is not refined any more. The dye is for uncle SAM's cut, tax purposes only. This is what was told to me by several fuel jobbers.

Around here the feds go to sale barns and other farmer-frequented areas and test trucks at random. It ain't worth taking a chance around here.

I have to agree with jwerkheiser. I have seen them testing at auction rings in Texas a number of times. I know someone that was caught running farm diesel in his truck and I can't remember what the fine was. I do remember him asking what the second fine would be and they told him "you can't afford it". It sure is tempting to run but I guess I will keep paying the tax.

ASSUMPTIONS ARE ALWAYS MADE BY PEOPLE WHO LACK FACTS WITH WHICH CORRECT STATEMENTS ARE MADE. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO RUN FARM USE DIESEL IN TRUCKS THAT NEVER LEAVE THE RANCH/FARM. I AM A RANCHER AND ITS 26 MILES TO THE FAR END OF MY RANCH. I HAVE A 97 DODGE/CUMMINS WITH 27000 MILES (BURNS RED DIESEL). MY QUESTION CONCERNED MY NEW 2003HO. I HAD NO IDEA THAT I WAS GOING TO BE FOUND GUILTY WITHOUT A TRIAL BUT SINCE OJ WALKED ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. IM NOT OFFENDED, JUST AMUSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLYS.

I'm pretty sure that the only difference is the blood money that red represents, they didn't squeeze it out so its still red. It may be lower quality at some vendors but I doubt it. We've run it in snowcats and trucks interchangeably forever. I've never known anyone without a loaded dually being stopped and checked.



If it's up to spec, clean and dry, burn it!

you can get red diesel for about $0. 75/gallon last time I checked. Un-died (clear) diesel, if bought in bulk over 5000 gallons you can get it for $0. 77/gallon.



Know of one farming operation that bought 25,000 gallons of clear for $0. 78/gallon. This way they could run it in everything from their tractors to pickups. It's also what I ran on my way to school. I paid them $1. 00/gallon for it, so it was well worth it. They go through that 25k gallons in about 4 months in the summer too... . lots of machinery running.

Hey Kowboy, don't be so jumpy, we're all in this thing to learn something. I work in a Hydrocracker Unit which is the major producer of diesel fuel. There is no reason for red dyed diesel to smoke or have less power, etc. etc. It is exactly the same diesel as the normal "pump" diesel and the dye doesn't cause smoking, it is inert. Montana put 42 "inspectors" throughout the state to monitor red dyed diesel usage. I don't know how they are doing at enforcing these laws. I know it takes several tanks of normal diesel before you can get rid of the red dye in the tank. Steve H>

it should not hurt your truck. if your HO is the one that never leaves the farm, go for it!!! if it does leave, you got to pay to play.
