I was looking at RED Grease - supposidly better - why woulnd't one use this on all zerks on our trucks??? Am I missing something??

We have RED RAM grease here in Canada. We use it on all our amphibious float airplanes, that are operated in fresh and salt water. best one we have found . I have been using it on my truck for 8 years. At 440,000kms still have original lower ball joints and tie rod ends. Hope this helps.

I used to use red tacky grease from Texaco, but my rep got me to try the Texaco starplex moly. Both are excellent greases, but the moly is a step above the red tacky. Just my . 02 .

When I bought my first W250 CTD in 1990 I had problems with the steering in that it would not want to return to center after going around a corner. You constantly had to drive it. If you corrected to the left slightly it would continue to the left and I was considering installing wedges to increase caster.

Fortunately I worked in an engineering lab in charge if cell maintenance and I had the leisure of researching oils and greases. I contacted Mobil and they sent me info on all their construction greases and the one that got my attention was Mobil Special which had Moly in it.

They claimed that it would free up the steering and reduce steering effort so I ordered a case for myself.

When I received it I greased my truck and took it for a drive and by the time I returned home the vehicle was returning to center on its own and the steering did feel free-er. Since then that's all I have used and I have no complaints. There were 235K on it when I retired it because of rust. It was used hard pulling a 5th wheel flatbed that I have grossed close to 22,000lbs in mountains. The u-joints are original as are the front end parts.

Caterpillar currently recommends Moly greases for their machines.

Mobil Special is no longer available here but there are others.

The fact that grease is red does not necessarily mean it's good. It's the manufacture that I look at and what they recommend it for.

Regardless of the grease you use frequent greasing is your best insurance.

OIL AND GREASE IS YOUR FRIEND

contact Valvoline. Tell them what you want to use it on. The will tell you which choices of grease you have, the size and type of container, and where to buy it.

We use several greases here at work, Castrol Pyroplex (NGLI3 and NGLI2) for general purpose, and a high moly NGLI3 grease for wheel bearings.

The Pyroplex is a lithium soap based grease and offers fantastic washout protection for bushings in suspension components and king pins. Its technically a marine grease so its specially formulated to tackify on contact with water. We use the NGLI2 on Ujoints where the NGLI3 has proven to be too viscous.

The Moly grease is also lithium soap based NGLI3 and offers excellent high load protection without much movement.

The big things to look for when shopping for greases aren't the colors (each manufacturer colors them whatever they choose,) but the NGLI number which is the viscosity of the grease, and the base which defines what application the grease is well suited for.

This site has an excellent description of the uses of various base stocks and the NGLI numbers of the greases

red grease works

That Mobil synthetic (red) grease is top notch, but has a anyone ever used Klueber from Germany? This stuff is amazing stuff ! Made of halocarbon oil.

We use it on highspeed Hermle milling centers at work and I dont plan on switching.
