Drove my buddies new 2003 and was very supprised it easly passes the redline marked on the tach. I s this normal my 97 will not pass the red unless you are down shifting? what is the reline supposed to be on these new trucks? By the way I also took the plunge today and should have new truck by the weekend.

I noticed that also. It seems to rev faster than my brothers modded 01. And it will go well past red-line. I think red starts at 3100. I have had mine to 3500. After I got past the first 500 "easy/nice" miles on mine I have been grabbing the next gear at 3000 on hard acceleration. But yesterday crossing 5 lanes of traffic I spun it up till I made it across, looked down and there it was at 3500.

I swear every day it feels like it's getting more power and I know it's getting better gas mileage. Same trip to work for the last 2 weeks and I'm up almost 3 mpg from day one. :D Just turned over 700 miles today.

I had a service rep that deals directly with Star tell me that these 03's actually have a red line of 4250 without harming the engine. That doesn't mean the computer will allow it but Cummins built it to handle it.

Seems strange with all the computer controls there's no rev limiter, but there isn't. I understand a code will be stored if the engine revs past some predetermined RPM though. Anyone know what that RPM is?

Rated Speed on the MY03 is 2900rpm (up from 2700 rpm since MY98. 5). The engine maintains about 80% of rated power to 3200 rpm. High idle is set at 3500 rpm. The engine will not float valves till past 4250rpm. You have a much longer governor droop on '03 to take advantage of for driveability.

Yeah, someone try that and let me know what you find out... :D

i'm betting that there are items with the engine that the dealer tech's are required to go to top idle for if it is in for service [emissions stuff usually]. it does not damage the engine in any way, although it must be unsetteling for someone who is not expecting that to happen
