I'm a computer technician by trade, working with the Law Enforcement community. I've seen quite a few police cars outfitted with aftermarket overhead lighting in the interior of thier cruiser that feature a RED light for use at night. One such model is made by Kerr Industries- model #KNVL55.

http://www.kerrindustries.ca/home.asp then select POLICE---ON LINE CATALOG---IMPALA OPTIONS---then scroll about 3/4 the way down under LIGHTING-INTERIOR. The light is referred to as NIGHT VISION DOME LAMP.

These lights are round, about 5" in diameter with a three-posistion switch for white, off or red light. I searched EBay and found nothing. Has anyone here ever installed such a light on thier Ram? Where did you get it?

Something more portable and cheaper , is a pen light from streamlite[ about 20 bucks] , uses 3-AAAA[yes quad A] batteries and LEDs and come in red & blue for low light needs one of the main things to do is to conseal the direct veiw of bulb [ use hand to cup around] with this set up , my oldest lite is 4 yrs. old and still have not changed batteries - and I use a lot . If you realy want a dome lite just shop around for red LEDs and wire them in they charge to much for there dome lite, and then you want real night vision look at infared or lightintensafires .

The KW I drive has red lights in the cab. 2 over the dash, and 2 under the dash. The ones above have their own switch, and the other 2 have one switch that controls both.

I think www.JCW.com carries that style of light that is above the dash, just need to install red bulbs.

When using the telescope I have a Mag light that uses 1 AAA battery. I used a red magic marker to coat the lens. Works great.

I think I have seen these lights in the Sailboat world also. Here is one

Any Marine supply store will have this type of light. West Marine is a big one that you can find online easily. They are used extensively in boating(nightime) applications. Just search for dome lights, cabin lights, helm lights, etc...

Just replace one of the over head reading light bulbs with color of choice. This gives you choice of white or red (blue or whatever). Works well...

hmm wonder why they are not just coming up but at least you can click on them...

Opened for me.

Thanks for the ideas guys, keep them rolling in! All I want to accomplish is to have lighting available in the cab that can be turned on at night without blinding me while I am driving. Still want the option of the stock white overheads though and that is why I am thinking of adding an additional red light. I like the bright LED idea. I hear that green is also a good color to use.

I believe what your looking for can be found at www.galls.com #VP197 It is a round dome

light with a 3 position switch, white-off-red.

Jim

That would be it! Why I didn't think of Galls I don't know. Heck, I think I have one of thier catalogs in the work van for that matter!
