I remember reading a post about the red cover on the fuel tank vent or rollover valve or something. Well I couldn't find the thread in the archives so I'll ask here.

Mine had it still on so I removed it today. When I did it hissed like crazy. I'm going to run awhile with it removed to see if I notice a difference. If anyone else has done this please post.

Not true! The red rollover valve cap is to be removed on (at least) '98. 5 and up Rams. This is supposed to be removed at the factory during assembly however, many '98. 5s left the factory with this still in place hence, the low power complaints. Some 24v Rammers had their fuel tanks seriously deformed because the cap was left on. I found my cap in the bed of my truck after it was delivered to me. Apparently my dealer had already gotten the heads up on this.

Remove that red cap now!!!!!!! If you don't you will deform your fuel tank. Don't know how long you have driven like this but if it's very long you probably have damaged your transfer pump also. I speak from experience. The red cap creates a vacume in the fuel tank.

I've never looked at mine. Where is the vent located? (On top of the tank I presume?)

Refer to TSB 18-21-99

"3). Inspect the fuel tank rollover valve for restrictions or that the shipping cap has not been left on the end of the valve. "

I believe you'll find that this is the cap in question.

Got 12800 miles on my truck with the cap on. Always had vacuum in the tank. I hope nothing is damaged. I had the lift pump replaced at around 5000(service action). So I hav 7000 hard miles on this pump. I don't think I have any damage. Starts right and has plenty of power. Also I have never had a low power problem.

Jim, the typical symptom was low power with side a side "benefit" of slightly better mileage due to fuel starvation. I remember reading where one Rammer had to have his fuel tank replaced as it was so deformed that its capacity was reduced from 35 gals. to approx. 30.

To check if the red cap is installed, position yourself beneath the truck in such a way you can view the top of the fuel tank. The red cap should be visible (or not) on the rollover valve which resides on atop the Fuel Tank Module. There is only one red cap... if it's there, remove it.

John,
I took it off Sunday when I changed my oil.
My mileage did drop a little according to the computer. The tank didn't look as if it was damaged but I'll inspect it again. I have never put more than 28 gal of fuel in my tank even though it read empty. Makes me wonder..... I thought I had plenty left now I'm not so sure.

Jim, I read where you had removed your cap. I elected to provide the heads up to others that may not have and are wondering just where that little bugger actually resides. The flip side to the slightly reduced mileage (due to cap removal) is additional power... how'd you make out in that department?

When the low fuel light comes on in my Ram (promptly at 1/8 tank) I take right AROUND 28 gallons as well.

John,
I'm running dd stage II m's so I have plenty of power and doubt if I can notice any difference now. At 1/8 tank I take 26 at empty I take 28

Went out and looked on my y2k 3500.
It had the red nipple on the rollover valve.
I took it off. Man,this is worth the dues. What a list.

As an aside,I called my dealer, nice folks but
the service manager had no idea what I was talking about. So what the heck, called the 800# for DC. They didn't know anything about it. Hmmm.

Kinda wondering how that valve keeps from sucking dirt and crap in the tank, with it uncapped.
I'm learning, a little a time.
Thanks
Fuzz
