Seriously,

Is there any way of using a 2nd Gen type cover on the new ones? Or any other options? I personally think that 4cyl black plastic front cover on the third Gens doesn't do the engine justice! I consider the engine to be a finely crafted piece of jewelry/swiss watch and the 3/4 length plastic cover just aint right!!

I agree. Now if we could only get someone to design a quality aftermarket "RED" valve cover so I can place my order.

Can't think of who right now...

I remember someone was working on a billet replacement cover for the cheap plastic one. 34 is too young to be forgetting everything:p

It was mentioned in issue 40 (I believe) that Moore Power Coatings was working on an aluminum piece to replace the black plastic on the valve cover. I sent Pat a PM asking about the availability, but I haven't heard back.

I haven't had a chance to look at mine yet, but I want to find a way to rework the crankcase vent. Maybe something aftermarket. I would like to polish or chrome the valve cover, but I don't want the CCV blocking the nice finish.

Definitely couldn't hurt trying to find a different way of rigging up the vent... . the current one ain't no great piece..... it stinks up worse than my 99 did.

I second that , one of the worst things about my truck, the fumes!

I haven't noticed any fumes, but the valve cover off my '01 is one of the few things that I miss. I suppose someone eventually will make something trick. I'm waiting. :D

Well I've been calling Cummins but not much help. The engines pictured that I can find are the Euro versions. Their breather is in a different spot so they don't have to have the vent in the valve cover. If I could get my hands on a red V/C I would probably drill a hole in the rear somewhere and run the blowby tube out of it. Location isn't terribly critical, just needs a place to vent, and I'm not worried about capturing oil mist & recondensing (which the piece under the plastic cover does).

The previous valve cover won't bolt down because they totally changed the design. I think it's because with the new injection system they couldn't keep the bolts in the same place.

Sucks don't it?

When Performance West Group built the modified "Cannon Ball" 3500, they came up with a bunch of chrome engine parts, including a chromed valve and breather cover. You might try contacting them through their website to inquire. I think they're in So Cal.

It looks to me that the plastic cover on the Cannonball Express is painted body color. That's an idea. I would rather remove it, paint (or polish or chrome) the metal cover and find a way to re-work the CCV.

hickory,

How did you keep the red off of the logos and lettering? Did you repaint that part by hand or mask it off somehow? That looks sharp and seems pretty simple and best of all not much $$$.
