Looking to get a new gearbox for my truck, and after researching on here, it looks like redhead seems like a good one. I had a borgeson on the 99 that was nice, but I just installed the steering stabilizer and its powdercoated red and I really dont want to hack it up to accomodate the borgeson. The stabilizer didnt help any on the stock box, steering is still fairly crappy. Who has a redhead on their truck that has been running it for a while, has it held up? Think Im gonna give them a call tmrw to see whats up as far as price, shipping, core charges

I have one on my 01. It has been on about 2 years. No problems with it yet. I also changed the ps pump at the same time as well as fixed a vacumm pump oil leak. It did make a huge difference in my steering but it was replacing the stock box with 275k on it as well as the ps pump so I did expect a substantial difference and was not disappointed. IIRC the box was in the 300 range. They were very nice to deal with called, ordered and it showed up in a couple days with an rma tag to return the core and core charge was refunded promptly or I might be mistaken that they didnt even charge for the core if they got it back within so many days. So far been very happy with it

There are risk with any rebuilt parts. a good core supply makes it better It seems like redhead cares about it's rep so you have a good shot at a decent box.

A buddy of mine put a redhead on his 00 and it leaked straight out of the box. They covered the part, but not labor, and when he called they told him that they don't do any sort of quality control testing.

Red head is local to me, I have one on my truck 3 yrs still nice and tight, guy is a class act old school... hes getting old going to be a shame when he hangs it up.

Nobody covers labor if the labor was not bought from the supplier... ... ... ... .

I'm a mechanic at a shop, and when we have a part failure, the parts houses cover our labor. The fact that redhead sells defective parts knowingly because they don't do any quality testing and then doesn't cover the consumer's labor is enough to make me never recommend them.

In my 40+ years of owning/working on big trucks, tractors, pickups and cars, I have never replaced a steering box, I have installed a few seal kits. I think they get a bad rap when a steering issue comes up.

Nick

Most consumers don't want to deal with seal kits - and small shop mechanics prefer to sell a part with a manufacturer/supplier warranty instead of a seal that their wallet pays to replace if it leaks.

The Saginaw box tends to wear, you can adjust a bit to take up some slack but eventually you're going to have to start replacing hard parts. At that point, a new/reman box might be cheaper once you get into it.
