Changed the fluid and filter in my 5600 today for the first time since it was installed as a brand new transmission about 38000 miles ago. I have a filter kit that was installed when Quad 4x4 did the conversion. I jacked up the rear of the truck about 6" to try and get more fluid out when I pulled the cover and managed to get out about 4. 5 quarts. I filled it using my little hand pump that I use for pumping oil into the outdrive in my boat and never spilled a drop until it was filled. Managed to get about 4. 5 quarts in, then fired it up and ran it in gear for a few minutes (back end still on stands) and added a bit more. Took a little over 4. 5 quarts.
The filter and bottom of the filter housing had plenty of brass particles in it but nothing that I'd consider out of the ordinary, they were all fine particles.
The magnets had some fine grey metallic sludge but once again no chunks and nothing unusual.
Once it was drained and the cover was off I took a rag and wiped inside the bottom of the box and had no brass deposits in there. I also let the fluid settle out in the bottom of a clean pail then drained it off and found no deposits in it either. Obviously the filter is doing a good job keeping the fluid clean and free of debris and wear particles.
Shifting feels much smoother now. Before the change I was finding it difficult to get into first if I was standing still, also I was getting the occasional shift that would seem to bounce off the top of a couple teeth before going into gear (make sense?). Now it slips into first without a problem and slips into gear with no hesitation when shifting. Not sure if it's because of the Redline or just having fresh fluid but from the other comments I read about Redline in a 5600 I'd say it certainly helped.
Bottom line, I think the filter and Redline was well worth the money. We'll see how long this new found smooth shifting lasts.
