I ordered up some Royal Purple Synchromax to put in the 6-speed of my 2003 because I can get it a lot more easily, and cheaper, than Redline MTL.

But then I dug up some spec sheets and am concerned the Royal Purple may be too thin.

SPECS:

Vis@100c cSt

Red = 10. 2 RP = 7. 7

Vis@40c cSt

Red = 50. 8 RP =35. 3

Viscosity Index

Red = 194 RP = 196

Cold Pour Point

Red = -58F RP = -40F

Flash Point

Red = 450F RP = 450F

On paper Redline looks like a winner but I'm not a tybologist. Comments anyone? I am thinking about turning down the RP and ordering Redline. I had Redline in my last truck and liked it, I'm worried about the Synchromax being too thin.

Thanks all. . .

Vaughn,

Although not a direct answer to your question, I put Redline MTL in my NV4500 a few years ago. I HATED the way it shifted. Almost like there was a delay (Move lever into gear and trans takes additional 1 sec to actually get into gear) I drained it out after a week.

Vaughn, I haven't ran RP in mine so I can't comment on that, however, I do run Red line and love it. A while ago there was a pretty long thread about guys switching to Red line, so I watched it and watched it, and no one had any complaints, so I tried it.

I had "another", non factory oil in it prior to the Red line, and it was pretty brown in color, shifted hard, and the trans was noisey. Dumped it, in went the Red line, trans is quieter, shifts smoother, and after quite some time it's still red (I have a lexan cover over the Fast-Cooler).

Like I said, no expeiriance with the RP, it might do the same thing.

Hemi, not to sound like a jerk :D but, the 5 and 6 speeds are totally different about they're lube needs.

I put Rp synchromax in mine about 15k ago and it's performed flawlessy, especially in cold weather it performs much better than the stock lube. It even elminated my infamous 3rd grind with my 6 speed. I also put it in the transfer case as well at the same time, again no problems. I shift on the fly regularly with no difficulty. I use 4wd a few times a month, mostly to get to my fav prairie dog spot. The rough ride i just put it in 1st low and let it crawl it's easier.

I think in another 15k I'm going to try Redline MTL just to give it a shot, everyone on here has good things to say, I won't take anything away from either, I think they are both top notch companies with top notch products.

I installed Redline MTL in my NV5600 about 1000 miles ago. The truck was at approaching 30k. The oil that I drained looked, well, lets just say I'm glad its outta there. :D The Redline is working well in the NV5600. I also installed Redline D4 ATF in the transfer case at the same time.

Last weekend I installed Redline 75w90 in the rear diff, what a difference that made in cold rolling resistance. I'm pretty sure any synthetic would be an improvement over the factory lube.

I just put rps syncromax in my 6spd and it shifts alot smoother and its great but , i have noticed a higher temp in there than the stock lube. I am wondering has anyone else had this problem? its not a ton higher but enough to notice. :confused:

I have RP in mine and am satisfied with it. I had compliments on how well my truck shifted before and it is noticeably better now.

Well based on Corey's post I would say that's due to it being thinner than Redline (and probably the stock stuff).

I guess I'll see if Napa's willing to send it back, if not I'll give the RP a try, otherwise I'll have to order Redline.

Anyone know of a good place where I can order it in for a good price??

Go to the Redline Lubricants on the internet and find a dealer. I did that last week and found a source that worked out good for me even up here where these kinds of things can be hard to find. I am using Redline for the whole drivetrain, hopefully it works as good as the dealer says. Good luck.

Jegs carries it so I ordered 6qts from them, $7. 99, free shipping, $8 handling though so I guess I shoulda got 12 qts. Oh well I'll do that next time.
