I drive 11 miles to work and back and I know about the drive freeway speeds to do a passive regen but is there like anything I can do when on surface streets to help it in the meantime?. . like have higher RPM Locking it in like 4th or 5th? . .

Also does the Active Regen occur only when you get the message on the overhead and drive a long way to get it started?. .

Is there any way on the overhead that you can monitor the DPF capacity level? . . With a reader? Smarty? . .

This is all new to me with my new truck last week. . I have 11 miles on it mostly around town... I did 1, 45 mile drive to do a passive. . Paranoid I guess. .

is there any rule of thumb on the length of time it takes with normal driving for the filter to get anywhere near full?

Sorry for all the Q's but just trying to absorb it all. .

TIA

Eric

Eric,

I am not sure about the 09's but I would think they would be similar to the 08's. When my truck would go into region, the only way that I would know that I was in region, was when my EGT gage would go above 1000F. This would stay this way ( when on highway) for 20 to 30 min's.

My OHD would never tell me that I needed a region or that I was in region mode.

Their is nothing you can do to trigger a regen, this is done by the ECM and the sensors that are onboard your truck. When the differential pressure sensor senses that the DPF needs to be regened, then this will trigger and event. Shutting off your truck during this event will not cause you a problem. You will go back into a regen until you have completed this cycle.

The best way to help your truck is to drive with the exhaust brake on all of the time. Take your truck out for a 30 min highway drive at least once a week.

When in the city I drive in 4 gear max I never use the OD on the transmission. This will keep me around 1900 RPM with 3. 73 gears and factory tires.

The Smart'y is a programmer and you do not leave this attached to the truck when you are done loading the program.

Good luck with your truck. I would also read more on the 6. 7 forum for more information.

(1) Exhaust Brake on all the time

(2) Drive the "snot" out of it (I shift gears at 2500+ rpt when warmed up) and downshift often (if you have a manual).

(3) Turn off overdrive (for automatics) in city driving. If you have the ability to "shift" an automatic, keep RPM's up before shifts.

Eric,

I've had my 09 for about 2 months now, and I am far from being an expert on these trucks with all the emissions on them. I just completed a 900+ mile trip with my camper on board, and never knew if a regen was happening. In fact, I've never known the whole time I've had the truck when a regen was occuring. No overhead message, no dash display. I have noticed the exhaust tone change at times, maybe this is when the regen is occuring. I do drive with the ebrake on all the time as mentioned above, and try to limit the short trips as much as possible. So far, so good.

FATCAT has it pretty well figured out. There has been some controversy about leaving the EB on all of the time. Mine has 37K miles on it and I have had to ' help' the regen 2 time, EVIC states when it is 80% or higher in capacity. 4th gear 75 mph for about 30 minutes makes the message go away. I turn my EB on every time the engine is started, so far no issues. It will however increase the idle and activate the EB by itself if the idle conditions are met and the DPF is near capacity, sort of an active Regen if it idles too much.

Get the latest flash (your 09 probably has it) and just drive it like you normally would. The whole concept of the regen is that it should occur in the background without the customer ever knowing about it. Unless you have some really strange drive cycle, you should not experience any overhead messages or trouble. The newest flashes and trucks are nothing like those of just a year or so ago. Relax and enjoy your new truck.

I like sag2's advice and believe he is telling the truth. A year or so ago when the 2007. 5 trucks were having sooting issues all the dealer service managers and techs across the country were providing all the "drive it like you stole it" advice and telling owners they could not idle their trucks. I also picked up their philosopy and parroted it here. I now retract the advice I have previously given here. I don't believe it is necessary to abuse the truck or shut it off instantly when stopped.

I drive mine pretty gently (I'm an old guy now and no longer in a big hurry) and idle it all the time if it is convenient to do so. I believe the reflashes have all but eliminated the early soot problems.

If the truck is only used for short trips, in town, at low speeds and low throttle settings, some highway driving may be required but otherwise I don't think many of us are going to see soot issues.

Some may conclude that I am biased. I suppose that is accurate. My thinking and words reflect the strong confidence I have in Cummins engineers, Cummins managment, and their products. I drink the Cummins koolaid.

The drive it like you stole it need is in the past. With the newest software passive regen happens fairly easy. As long as you drive steady state for a bit it will happen when it is needed. The high rpm does not speed up the regen process it will slow it down. It can be monitored with the starscan,at higher throttle input the time can increase over a more sedate pace. If I owned a 6. 7 I would proably pull the egr valve and clean it as a part of my P. M. Program.

A relatively simple job. It will only take about an hour to perform.

Hmmmm. That's interesting. What would you suggest as a service interval? My truck has about 62k on it so far and I haven't experienced any soot issues.

I wouldn't do it myself but I have a good friend who was previously a Dodge/Cummins dealer tech and does some after hours work occasionally.

As the miles rack up the EGR valve does not travel as easily as when it is clean. If it were mine I would do it at 30k intervals.

You are also coming up on the interval to replace the ccv filter, the factory recommends cleaning the egr system also at 67500 mi IRRC.

Bob,

Thanks for the advice. I'll order a CCV filter and talk to my young mechanic friend about an EGR clean service.

I'll report what he finds when he pulls the EGR.

He will find the egr valve has some resistance to movement and a good amount of carbon build up :-laf I have gone through cases of egr cleaner for my customers.

Bob,

I looked at my owner's manual service schedule yesterday afternoon after we exchanged the above posts.

The scheduled replacement for the CCV filter in my '08 C&C is 75,000 miles, not 67,500. I wonder . . . did Dodge/Cummins determine that the C&C doesn't contaminate the filter on a C&C as quickly as on a pickup or was that requirement changed later?

I e-mailed "K" at MOPAR4LESS, my favorite parts woman, yesterday afternoon and a new CCV filter and Aisin filter are on the way.

Do you still think based on shop experience I should have my mechanic buddy replace the CCV filter and clean the EGR at 67,500?

I think I'll ask my young mechanic buddy to pick a weekend in the next month or two when it is convenient for him, maybe a cold or rainy weekend, and let him do the filter change and EGR cleaning pm when it is convenient rather than a fixed mileage point.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Are there any instructions on this? and are there any mandatory replacement parts that need to be replaced if I do this Job? i would hate to get in to it and realize i needed to order some parts.

Thanks

Will
