Regeneration is an event that is controlled by the computer based on input from sensors...

We have an 08 5500 that we have 40K miles... the driver comments to me all the time that he has never noticed it happening... . for us its seamless... .

He drives the truck like he stole it... and its loaded (19,000 lbs) most of the time...

Mine doesn't get driven like that. I use it for short trips around town during the week and on the weekend it gets to go on the freeway at which time it takes 20 minutes to do its regen. I can tell by watching the mileage on the console. Sometimes it even gets to tow my travel trailer.

The answer is both. A pickup will attempt a regen when the soot load reaches 47 grams or a soot load timer of 24,000. A chassis cab will do a regen at 57 grams or timer of 36,000. Both of these numbers can be observed with a StarScan or StarMobile.

Assuming the truck can be driven long enough to complete the regen, it lasts about 40 minutes until the soot load is about 25g. The best estimated soot load I have observed from a new DPF is about 8g. If you force a second regen using the scan tool you can get them pretty low.

I've had an Edge Insight for about 25 regens. The lowest "time since regen" I 've seen was 67,000 and change, the highest just shy of 74,000. except for those two I think all the ones I've witnessed have been within 30 minutes either side of 72,000. The filter load display doesn't work on mine for whatever reason.

I know when my truck is in regen cause it sounds like the exhaust brake is on at a stoplight and it sorta pops a little bit when I hit the go pedal. And yes, that's with the EB switch turned off. The sound is a little different than the brake, more of a growl to it. The "pop" is very similar to what my BD brake sounded like on my '04. 5 when it released.

regens

Mine did a regen while coming home from Wyoming from Christmas. 4000 miles and the truck has been fine, looked up and saw message on the console we left on slick roads and run in 5th gear about 50 mph in about 15 minutes it was all over. I would rather not have all that junk on there but it seems to work. We are very pleased with the truck.

sorry sig isn't updated

truck is a 08 mega 3500 68rfe 4x4 srw

Does the soot load timer count in seconds?

Depends on what you mean. Soot load is measured in grams, but the regen timer is in seconds.

In soot load the ECM calls for a regen at 47 grams (load) or 24,000 seconds (timer) on P/U and 57 grams or 36,000 on CC. Load is measured by pressure sensors in the DPF.
