Does anyone know if I purchase an 03 HO 4X4 in Nevada and have it registered in that state for a year or so, will I be able to register it in California after that year has gone by? We don't have smog tests on diesels in California yet. I know they are coming. We also don't have to smog new gas vehicles for the first four years.

Would they just deny registration in California????? Thanks for any info... ... . :{ :(

Seems to me you can't register it new in CA, but after 7500 miles you can. At least that's what I heard. Some members here have done it on previous year models.

The current trick is join AAA. When you have 7501 miles on the truck go into AAA and register in state. They dont for what ever reason have a problem like DMV might. DMV is 50/50 chance of "looking it the matter".

I just went through this with a vehicle from Arizona. If your truck has been registered out-of-state, and has more than 7500 miles on the odometer, it can be transfered to a Calif. title. There is no smog inspection for diesels, however you will need to get a v. i. n. inspection at the dmv or CHP. BTW, the smog impact fee was declared illegal awhile back. It is no longer collected. I'll second the post on AAA-it's the only way to go.

GregSmith, you mentioned a VIN inspection. What exactally does that consist of? I live in Bakersfield Ca. and have a truck on order in Colorado and plan on registering it there until I get the miles on it. Just curious about the VIN inspection and also is there a time restiction, meaning does the truck have to be XXX many months old as well as have 7501 miles or is it just the miles?

VIN inspection

Go to AAA! I registered a 2000 vehicle in CA with only 4500 miles last year - it was only possible because of AAA. It was gas powered so I needed a smog check. I had to pay sales tax (since I just purchased it) and registration/licensing fees. As stated above there is no longer a "welcome to California tax" of $300 per vehicle.

VIN inspection meant that the nice lady came outside and looked at the VIN number- and that it matched the title. She didn't notice the (illegal) tint on the driver/passenger side window, the wheels and tires protruding beyond legal limits (it was a Jeep TJ with DANA 60 axles), etc... . )

If you don't go to AAA they'll send you to the DMV  which is not a place you want to spend an entire day and then be rejected - although you are guaranteed to meet some interesting people!:D

I moved to CA early 98 and paid the smog impact fee on both of my vehicles. I them moved out of CA in late 99. The state of CA refunded the smog impact fees on both of my vehicles, even though I had moved out of CA before the fee lost in court. :D I never thought that I would receive a check from the CA DMV!

The v. i. n. inspection just verifies that the dash plaque number and the title match. It can be done at the d. m. v. (not recommended), the CHP or any other law enforcement agency. There is a dmv form you'll need to take with you when you get the inspection done. The form can be downloaded from the dmv web site.

AAA is the "Auto Club". Our local affiliate is the Automobile Club of Southern California. One of their many valuable services is doing DMV work for its members. Saves lots of time standing in line.

Better check with DMV, I'm not sure but, I do not believe that you can register it out of state, in your name if you're a CA resident.

I think it has to be registered in CA as a used vehicle and if you're the out of state owner, it isn't considered used.

Plus, don't get caught driving it in CA with a CA address and driver's lic. they'll make it expensive for you.

Unless it's changed you only have 10 days once you've established residence or become employed (which would seem to apply to you}. There are a lot of LEOS (CHP) that watch for this, if they see you several days parked at a business or coming out of a housing area they will check you out, even the locals patrolling your neighborhood and notice this "nice" new Dodge parked in the driveway or at the curb for a couple of weeks and notice you making with all the "add on" goodies.

Go to the DMV and find out first hand or as others mentioned to the AAA and ask specific questions and regs. , it's a lot less expensive to know how the system works before getting caught.

Former CA resident, never again!Oo.
