After 5 years I have retired my Dodge as my daily driver. I still need it to haul hay & horses but 7,000 lbs is a lot to drive to the grocery store. My Golf is a joy to drive but it won't out drag my Dodge. I'll have to do something about that. :-laf

I'm driving my Mega cab 175 miles each way to work once a week. I really need a VW diesel or something that gets over 40 mpg. I know where you're coming from.

Don't get me wrong. I love my diesel Ram. That truck made driving fun again after years of doggy Subaru's & a gas guzzling Dodge 4x4 360. My new Golf is much more nimble & it's been getting 40+ mpg on winter fuel.

I test drove an '09 diesel Jetta a few months ago, and if I ever had to get a car that "felt" right and gave great mpg, this would be the car... diesel of course!! Wife and I actually contemplated trading our minivan for the VW, but we like the minivan too much, just too practical for our needs.

I have an 01 TDI Jetta with 210,000 miles on it and it is still getting 49mpg on average and upwards of 53mpg on good days. They arent really cheap to fix, but parts don't even come close to the Hybrid parts. Just my 2 cents

When not driving my truck have a 2008 Chevy Equinox. Awesome mileage and AWD for the little snow an ice we get here. Traction control on puts power from to rear as necessary or all 4. If one wheel loses traction it applies brake to that wheel to stop spinning(I think that is how it works). Can you believe an electric motor that steers this thing. It even adjust the steering sensitivity when moving slow and highway speeds(I guess that means number of turns lock to lock). Talk about fly by wire. This thing has so many bells and whistles have no idea what I am going to do if it needs something fixed. Have service manual's (4 books) and believe me when I say this is not my 2001 Dodge Ram(course truck service manual's 3 books STILL)!!!!

Darkhorse! about that Golf - from what I've seen I'm sure this fraternity has some minds to help turn it supersonic!! Now…about the needed pilot's license!!:-laf Seriously - We (meaning the wife) are considering a WeedublYa

for my 'alternate car' seems like ya can't beat 'em!!!

guys watch the VW diesels, Bugs and Golfs , I was looking at them a couple of years ago for a work car and it was a 50/50 crap shoot if you got a good one or not, you should google them, tons to read, plenty of unhappy people posting about them and it was not just one thing to overcome they had a long list of items not working and the dealers were blowing people off which blew my mind as they were always a good Co in the past... . just a heads up, I am huge VW fan played with bugs and early water pumper cars and loved them, suckers always went down the road, I went with a Honda after reading the net.

A lot of the engine problems in the early VW diesels were due to the crappy diesel fuel we had here, love it or hate it , the new Ultra low sulfur fuel tightened the standard quite a bit and made them run a lot more consisted
pete.

PV, just to make sure I was recalling right I just googled them again using this search," - vw, bug, diesel, problems " , pages and pages of forums, help pages, complaint forums,... ..... electrical gremlins, trans issues, window regulatores, glow plug issues, etc... . all I am saying there not the VW we had as kids, check one real well before buying.

I know if you look for problems, you will find them. All makes have problems. I'm pretty happy with my Golf. I found a forum similar to this one. TDI Club.com. I think I'll do some bombing similar to what I've done with my Cummins. The principles are the same but the parts look tiny. :-laf

The Newer Jetta's are Far above anything Honda can come out with . What they don't tell you about the hybrid car's is they have a controller for each battery and you have to replace All or none as if you only do battery the computer for battery dies No Thank's You will never catch me in Anything Made by Honda . Besides I don't fit in em

I own a 2009 Jetta Sportwagon TDI And absolutely love it !!!

On a good day I get 54 miles to the gallon and its Not broken in. It goes like a bat out of hell:-laf

Not to mention they look pretty sporty :D

Here's some pictures of what one looks like :-laf:-laf

Sorry for the slew of pictures ,Didn't know how to cut them back

Nice!

You're lucky you scored a Sportwagon. My buddy's a dealer in Carlsbad and he sells every TDI that comes in the door. Unfortunately,WV won't allocate enough for the demand. The reliability of the new ones exceeds the previous models at the same mileage. Bookoo legroom and I'm 6'4". Your fuel economy seems unusually high.

Nice thread darkhorse, Did you do the computer upgrade that saves the EGR (I think) from clogging up? Is it called "VAG-COM". I have read for many hours on the VW diesel site but that was months ago. Besides I will be 50 y/o in a few months and it's about time my mind slipped. LOL

I was about to jump on a new VW diesel sportwagon when the stolen money was gong around last month. Cash for Clunkers. My 1996 Regal would not fit in their 18 mpg or less plan. Plus they (our pitiful Gov) are offering a $1500 rebate for clean diesels. If I buy one it won't be clean for long. Anything that gets 50 mpg can't be too poluting. Don't get me wrong. I work in a water plant and know the ill effects of poluted water-ways. I see first hand how these Gores and tree huggers are wasteing our money with their scare tactics.

I guess I've typed enough. Merry Christmas to all.

dsherman, glad you like it. You are lucky.
