my service manual for my '97 says there should be a spring clip that retains the release fork on the pivot ball. I had no such part, nor pieces of any part like that when I pulled my transmission out. any one else notice this?

I don't know where to get one but you should have it. Should the fork fall off the ball in the installation process (or any time for that matter) it could prove quite difficult to get back on. This clip is very simple and could possibly be fashoned from some spring steel wire or maybe something else if you can't find a source. All it does is prevent the fork from falling off the ball without resticting movement.

Once it's back together with the slave installed I don't see how it can get loose. I guess you're good to go. Happy motoring.
