Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Reman VP44 vs. New one

Are the reman VP44's inferior to the new ones? I'm thinking not. They should be just like new, and they cost a lot less... .

Just wanted some opinions/insight on this.

We have sold a lot of new ones, but have never sold a rebuilt one. What type ofd price difference are you seeing?

I hear there is not very much difference in price,reman vs new.

With new there is probably a better/longer warranty. Also going with new you get to keep your old pump,with reman you have to give them your core (old pump). You need to check all the details and read the fine print.

DEZLPWR, I feel that the Remans tend to have more problems, I am not convinced that a good job of testing the electronics is performed when they go thru the rebuild process. I know as far as ECMs' go I would rather bolt one on that is brand new than reman. I only say this because of 2 bad experiences I had with reman ECMs' a couple years ago. Perhaps things have improved. is the concern over this worth the difference in price? I can't answer that. I believe they will carry the same warranty, at least if you buy them from Cummins.



There are some very good independent pump shops out there, they may do some special polishing or something of that nature that will help extend life of the mechanical portion of the pump. Here again you need to ask how well they will stand behind there product. --- A Johnson

When I buy a remanufactured part I. E. motor carburator,brake cylinder I pay a lesser price for an inferior product. I do not expect a reman to last half as long as a brand new one. The new ones also carry a longer warranty. None of these statements apply to any experience I have with reman injection pumps. That is what I expect from a reman product. Reman without core costs the same as new I believe. Only while new ones remain available.

What sort of warranty does cummins offer on there crate reman ISBs? Is it comparible to new? just thinking out loud.

Cummins Recon engine usually carry a 1 year 100,000 mile warranty regardless of engine model. You can then buy extended coverages to provide warranty up to about 5 years or 500,000 miles. These extended coverages will not cover maintanence items ie; fuel pump, turbo, waterpump, fan hub.

I believe this is the same with new engines also.



If you purchase a VP-44 over the counter, I THINK, it will be warranted for 6 months unlimited mileage. I THINK this applies to new or reman alike.

We really need to ask a Cummins Warranty Administrator.

I believe it applies to the original question. Are remans any worse than new? Well what does cummins think. Are they willing to back there reman for 5 years 100k. I called cummins about the brand new vp44 I think they said 12 months unlimited miles. What sort of warranty is on the reman? It also has a 2600 dollar tab to go with it though. I paid 1400 for mine brand new. Not sure of the warranty bosch provides. Thats the one that interests me. The old noodle isnt as accurate as it used to be but thats what I remember hearing.

Any chance the reman is actually better? I figure they would do a better job of getting rid of the burrs on pump. This is what causes the pump to fail. I think the biggest variable would be the shop rebuilding the pump. I've had excellent results with rebuilt parts for a gasser (water pump, starter, alternator) when I bought them from a good rebuilder. Of course, a VP44 is a little more complicated.



Maybe the DD rebuild is the best option??? Anyone know what Lawrence does during his rebuild?

My re-man VP44 was installed by Cummins in Indianopolis, In. Is warranteed for 1 yr. unlimited miles. Price was 1600 installed. When I got home, found out I could have got a new one from dlr. for 1100 + inst. Pump alone from Cummins was 1300.
