Well, its time for me to do the first transmission Fluid/Filters Change. I was thinking of going with a deep sump pan for a couple of reasons...1) I dont want to take a transmission Fluid bath every time I change the fluid/filters 2) would rather replace gaskets then use RTV and 3) increased fluid cooling. So all aluminum pans look about the same and are somewhat equally priced, other then that does anyone have any preference?

I would also like to change the spin on filter fitting (adapter) to the steel version. A company called ReMax makes one for $30. And I will always stay with Mopar OEM Filters.

I would like recommendations on which pan? Mag-Hytec, BD, Hughes, PPE, Afe. Did you upgrade the spin on filter adapter? Which ATF fluid? And did you include a protective additive i.e. Lube Guard Platinum?

I was going to take it to a local HP Transmission Service Center....but thought other then being careful with the fluid mess it would not be too difficult. I am more concerned with replacing the stock threaded plastic adapter for the spin on filter. Thanks guys....
 
I can't help you with the filter adapter, but you could just drill out the stock pan and install a drain plug for about $5 if taking an oil bath is your main concern.

For fluid, if it's a 68RFE then any brand ATF+4 will do. If it's an Aisin then it does use a different fluid.

As for the pans, I've used Mag-Hytec in the past and can say it's a quality piece. Very questionable ROI for me though.

Now let the "partial oil change" war begin. :rolleyes:

Thx GrantP........Yup forgot 68RFE!!!! Another issue is the RTV....I dont mind the $300 bucks for a new pan and especially if I can replace gaskets and not adding RTV each time.

I get it, I hate using RTV on pans too. It's a lot more work to clean it up every time you have to drop it. I A$$umed the 68rfe used a reusable gasket like my 48re, seems like they took a step backwards on that one if it's RTV.

In my opinion.....the steel fitting adaptor is a solution for a problem that rarely exists.
As stated previously.....MOPAR filters, and any licensed ATF+4. I’m not big on additives during any transmission servicing.

I don’t see any large reduction in temps (I’m sure it’s due to the TBV) but I do have about an extra 5 quarts circulating through my system.

Don’t worry about the partial fluid change. I know a guy over on CF w/470k on his 68RFE and he does partial fluid changes. My 2014 RAM 3500 w/AS69RC made it to 362k with partial fluid changes, too.......and shifted great at trade in time. :D

No it doesn't, my eyes fell out as I did the first change on my Durango and found RTV.

Is it possible that the increased fluid volume then becomes a reservoir of Hot fluid should trouble arise, and take longer to cool? The physics of big pans never added up for me. 10 years ago I installed an aux Derale trans cooler w/12 bladed fan & thermostat to help with temporary "overheating" conditions like being stuck in uphill traffic, etc. $.02
 
For me, I really only wanted to replace the pan, due to the lack of a drain plug and gasket. Then I talked to a transmission repair shop to see about the cost and he told me they always replace the stock Filter Spin on Screw with a steel version vs the plastic OEM. He said "they have a tendency to break off, leaving a portion up inside the transmission and then you have more problems getting the remaining plastic screw out. IDK, I am not experienced with the stuff at all. Just thought if going through this upgrade (maintenance) if it made sense? As far as the actually cooling function is concerned, I have no idea.
 
Well......it appears that it has peaked your curiosity more than once, so, for your peace of mind, you may as well go ahead and drop the extra $30 and not have any regrets...
