Woke up this morning the proud owner of a new Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag. I had purchased a gun bash ticket for one of the local fire departments, and completely forgot about it until I got the call this morning that I had won. Not real sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but it looks to be a very nice gun. :)

So who here is a 7mm mag or Remington 700 fan? Tell me all the good and bad about the new toy I got with my $20 gun bash ticket.

Congratulations on having the winning ticket. Now all you need to do is go out and take it hunting. Remington receiver's are among the best for standard production rifles and hence the reason so many sniper type rifles start off with a Remington receiver.

As for the 7mm Mag caliber. It's a nice flat shooing caliber and an excellent choice for most North American big game. Enjoy the new rifle.

I think that gun is a little too much for those Keystone whitetails. I heard for those you just need to hide behind the flowers on your front porch with a hammer. You'll have to come out west for mulies at 400 yards! Or, just send me the gun and I'll use it. :-laf

Yea, my wife keeps saying that all I need to do is club one over the head while they are eating the apples off our trees. :-laf

Thanks. I'm pretty excited about it. This will be a nice complement to the others I have I believe.

That rifle cartridge combo is a winner, out here for everything from varmints to big game. I spent the afternoon at my friends house, today, helping him reload 7mm Remington Magnum ammo for his Antelope hunt. His rifle is a M-700 also. He has taken numerous Elk, Deer and Antelope with it, over the years. Wicked on Coyotes, if you dont sell the hidesOo. ! Congratulations! GregH

160 grains at 3000 fps is a nice setup for all mid size game. I have two. It really excels on desert mulies.

Thanks for the good reviews. I'm planning on using it for deer this year instead of my Weatherby. Now to find just the right optics... ..... :)

Congratulations on the nice rifle. Depending upon how much recoil you are willing to tolerate... ..... you may change your mind about this rifle after you fire a few rounds.

Be careful!

Unless you are very recoil sensitive, have neck or shoulder problems. In that case a VAIS muzzle brake is a good investment. Reloading a lighter weight bullet will reduce recoil, also. Do NOT use "reduced powder charges" to obtain reduced recoil in a large capacity case and slow burning powders. This is a receipe for disaster. This is considered an unsafe reloading practice. Unless I'm mistaking, the recoil on that 7mm should be less than the . 300 WBY mag that I use for big game. If that's the case, I'm not real concerned about it.

I have one, Rem 700BDL in 7mmRemMag. I use it for everything from groundhogs to deer. I handload and go with light 100gr HPs for whistlepigs, and 140s for VA deer. My dad has used his 7mm for boar in Germany. 175s dropped them right there.

Way to go! Great rifle.

But...

Replace the trigger asap. If it is anything like mine, it sucks. My had about 7lbs of trigger pull. I dropped a Timney trigger in, adjusted to about 3. 5lbs, and my groups tightened up to 1 moa or less (depending on load) Best $100 I ever spent.

Recoil is no where near as bad a, say, as 300 WinMag.

Enjoy

I believe Remington still has adjustable triggers, if you are willing to tinker with the screws. They have a locktite type seal on them, but you can scrape that off and turn the screws. There are three involved, one for creep, one for weight of pull and one for overtravel. On several of my Remingtons, I was able to get a really good trigger pull, one could not be adjusted for anything. It's worth a try. Here is a link with a picture of the screws and instructions on how to do it.

Remington Trigger Adjustments

BTW, this and free-floating the barrel is all I had to do to mine to get 1/4" groups out of it.

I truly haven't even had it out of the box yet. But, I do believe that I saw something about adjusting the trigger when I glanced at the owners book.

We probably have about 6-7 Rems in the family, in various calibers. Adjusted all the triggers, and use a dab of clear fingernail polish on the screws after, and never had one loosen up. Definitely worth a try, no cost, and if you can't get it where you like, nothing lost but the time trying. Just might save you something. If it don't work out, you can always replace it with aftermarket.

What you saw in the book was probably the lawyers warning not to adjust the trigger.

Howdy...

I have one... ... just make sure ALL your DENTAL work is in good shape... cause unless you are a young man... it'll kick the everlovin dog-**** out of you every time you pull the trigger!!!!
