Has anyone installed a remote starter? I'm about ready to do it on my 2001. 5 (due in a week)and the dealer said that he can program a delay before the start signal is sent - any comments? Thanks-

I installed a Valant remote start keyless entry in my '95 and have been happy. I bought it just for the keyless entry on sale from JC Whitney($39)but after seeing everything it would do ended up connecting everything. It has a diesel mode switch that will do the wait to start heater cycle, which I don't use because I plug in the block heater. You can adjust the crank time and how long it will run after being started remotely. Another feature that I use a lot in the winter is that you can remove the key, lock doors and leave it running,if anyone tries to move it it will shut down, you can also shut down remotely. You can also program it to start the engine every hour and run for 10 or 20 minutes to keep it warm, not really a good idea with a Cummins. It flashes parking lights when locking or unlocking doors,p. lights stay on when it is remote started,if the hood is open the remote start is disabled so a mechcanic doesn't get hurt. Remote works from 300ft,it had one more button to open a trunk,I connected it to the horn relay, makes it easy to find where you parked. Only bad thing is once I forgot to plug the block heater in, since I had the wait to start feature turned off and can't hear the truck running from my house,it kept trying to start the truck once a minute till the battery ran down. You can download wiring diagrams/color codes for any rig from their website,it was right on for my 2500. This electronic marvel was normally $79 and considering everything it will do it's worth it even at the higher price. Took me 6 hours to install, but I soldered and heat shrunk all the connections, there's lots of them(at least 25). I'd do it again on a new truck,it's worth it to me. For automatics only.

I've had one on my Honda for 2 years. It is a great invention. people think it is only to warm up the car in the winter. The summers in so-cal are pretty hot and it is great to slide into a cold car.
I was thinking about the delay start with the CTD.
Has any one done this successfully? How?

I have had one since the second day i owned the truck. I had a Code-Alarm alarm /keyless entry and remote start installed. The code alarm waits about 25 seconds after activating the ignition before cranking, to allow the heater grid to warm up. They also programmed the starter to run for I believe its 25 minutes before shutting off. It works great ecspecially since I only have about a 5 mile ride to work, it allows the engine to run a little longer. I use it all year, and it is real nice to get in the truck with the windows clear from running with the defroster on combined with the block heater in the winter.

I have a Viper remote starter/alarm. I don't think you can install a Viper yourself (the dealers won't sell it unless they install it). I had it installed originaly in my 98 gasser, and then paid the installer to move it into my current truck. It is connected to my wait to start light. I have been very happy with my Viper. It is more expensive than the "self install models", but you get what you pay for. I was on the 5th floor of a hospital last week (dad has cancer), and I looked out the window at my truck (about 1/4 mile away), pushed the start button and she started right up. #ad

Every place I have been to that does remote starters have flat out REFUSED to install one in a vehicle with standard transmission, when I have casually inquired about it.
I certainly can understand why, from a safety and liability aspect. #ad

I had mine installed on the 2nd day too! It has all the features listed above and it has 1/4 mile range too. The range is important aand the wait to start is too. I'd hate to have to go out when its 25 below and start my truck because I didn't hook up the WTS. I have remote started my truck at 25 below without pluging it in. I also use a proprod made out of 1/4 treaded rod and 2 nuts. I drilled a hole (just through the plastic) in the pedal an inch from the bottom and a hole in the seat frame. When my truck starts it idles at 1250 RPM. A nutural switch can be installed for the manuals at the install shop for an extra $25. !!!!!

Mike, how does the nuetral switch work? I've thought about different ways to build one, but never seen a commercial one. I'd like to have a remote start, but have been pretty lazy, plus I already have the OE keyless. I'd also have to devise a high idle, since my truck will never start without throttle (even when at operating temp).
