My son needs to install a remote start on a 96 automatic for a customer.

How is this done so the grid heater will cycle properly?

Would appreciate a 'how to' from someone who's done it.

Thanks.

JLEONARD, I have heard a little about diesel remote starters and I will share that with you if you have five seconds. Your remote starter should have an input that can be tied electrically to the "Wait to start" light in the dash. The light in the dash acts as a delay. As long (within reason) as the WTS light is on, the starter should not be engaged by the remote starter. When the WTS light goes off, the starter can be triggered by the remote starter and the truck started. Hope that helps.

Some remote starts that I have dealt with do not tire into the wait to start light, but rather they wait 30 seconds before starting the truck. Code Alarm is one such unit that does this.

I've done quite a few,and I find the ones that are triggered when the wait to start light goes out tend to work better.

You will also need a unit with programmable crank times for the 96. The unit will look for a "running" signal to stop cranking when the engine starts. The newer 24V have a cam sensor you can tie into which works quite well. On the 12V motors we only have the tach sensor on the damper, which I have never been able to get to work well with most units. By being able to adjust crank tiime, you can crank it a little longer to make sure it fires, without cranking it too long and killing the starter drive.

I have wire color charts and everything,so if you need more info, drop me a line.

Geez,it's been 4 or 5 years since those installs, old brain is kinda foggy, but I do remember trying everything with the mfg's of the unit's and it would not work. I have since installed the same unit on the 24V's and we just tapped into the cam sesor wires at the PCM. No problems. I think either the tach sensor output was too low,or not within a specific range to work for that type of unit. We ended up installing a unit with adjustable crank times.

On my 97,I have a unit made by design tech, and it lets you program individual crank times (so many seconds). It also has the tach input wire, but it just won't pick up off the tach sensor. I have it dialed in and it starts perfectly everytime. It is also the type that monitors the wait to start lamp before cranking.

My Valiant remote start run sensor works fine on the tach wire, just have to tap into it after the PCM. If you tap in ahead of the PCM it won't work. My remote has different times for wait to start, 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds. Since I plug in I leave it on 0.
