Before I get into it there has to be a little background laid. My girlfriend, for my birthday decided to enhance my cummins, with keyless entry and remote start. She decided this after hearing me talk about all the reading and research I had done on the topic here on the TDR. So, to be the sweetheart she is she went and had it installed. Well, for those of us who would rather learn, or know what to do when working on our trucks, its your turn to cringe now. So I guess the installer doesnt know his head from... ... well a hole in the ground. So when I am leaning over to get a beer out of the cooler in the back the truck starts its sequence of a timer and then procedes to start the truck, while I am throwing perfectly good Budwiser to jump in the truck and rip it out of gear to prevent a couple of horses from dying an untimely death. Anyways, so the installer and I have had talks to say the least, after I have simply opened up the owners manual of my Viper alarm/keyless entry, and pointed out to him that "this unit is not intended and shall not be used on a vehicle equipped with a standard transmission". So he has taken a few steps back and now is telling me that he can put a switch on the unit so when I dont want to use the remote start I can leave it in gear when I park it. I have once again stated the fact that I WANT TO FOOLPROOF THIS UNIT. I want a 5 year old to safely use the equipment that he has installed in the truck. So he has left me with this question. He tells me that on some transmissions there may be a wire that goes to ground ONLY when in NEUTRAL, I am in no way transmission savy, so I am asking of my technicians on the TDR to help me out with this. IS THERE SUCH A THING ON OUR TRUCKS, AS A WIRE THAT "GOES" NEUTRAL WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL? If not, what have others done to correct this problem, I love the idea of being able to reach out the door, unplug the extention chord, and start the truck without taking my cummins slippers off, and without having to worry about it leaving without me. Thanks in advance for your advice and expertise!!!

Remote Start on Manual transmission

The answer I have been told is NO! There is no wire on the transmission.

I have a remote start on mine and it is certified for manual transmission use (Compu Star). It has a routine that has to be followed in order for it to arm itself for start operation. Basicly I have to set the emerengcy brake and set the transmission in netrual, while the engine is still running. Then get out of the vehicle, close the door and the engine will stop and the system is ready for a start command. The system assumes at this point, that if I can get out of the vehicle while the engine is still running and close the door then the transmission must be in netrual. The system also sense the emergency brake to ensure that it is set.

There is only one other type of system that I have heard of that is certified for manual trannies and it uses a laser that learns and remember the position of the gear stick. I have not seen one of these so I do not know how well it works.

You need to be very careful because these trucks are so big and heavy that you can cause alot of damage just off starter power alone so be sure that whatever system you get has no way of starting in gear. I have seen the truck move forward even with the emergency brake set so a system that only monitors this will not be safe either.

Then even with a system that is certified, make it a pratice to always parking it in netrual and brake set just in case.

JMHO and experience..... Lets not talk about the experience part. .
