I installed an AvantGuard 4 alarm from Clifford. It has a remote start option. Easy to install if you have tools and time. The directions are a novel, as there are many features. It has two remotes and a CD-ROM to program. Mine is three years old and I'm very satisfied. I'm sure they have a newer product, but that doesn't mean it's better!

Two questions

1. Does the remote starter Wait to Start or does it kick the starter over instantly?

2. Does anyone run a Turbo cool down function where motor stays running after turning key off until EGT is down?

Eric

(1) You program the amount of time to wait till the starter kicks over.

Mine waits 12 seconds.

(2) I don't but they're out on the market.

Eric - I and several others are running the ISSpro turbo temp monitor which does exactly what you are looking for. I bought mine through http://www.dieselpage.com . There are install directions on their site that I wrote up which are for the 24v trucks. For your 12v truck you shouldn't have to worry about that and it's an easy install. IMHO, it's one of the best convenience items I've installed on my truck.

Bob Ellithorpe,

I can't believe your temps were never high enough to make cool down necessary? What did you do to aid air intake? exhaust? Where were you taking your reading from? At what temp do you fell cooldown is necessary?

Mine empty needs to cool down in 95 degree weather and this is a stock truck (awaiting injector and #5 plate install) with a 4" exhasut. Pre turbo it will hit 300 in very little time, but post turbo it's at least a minute to hit 300. If I'm towing it's longer.

As far as remote starters go if you do a search there is a lot of info available. I have posted on this topic many times.

This 300° shut down temp is something I've always wondered about, the only place I've ever seen it is here. In my 30 years of operating diesels I always heard 600° post turbo is safe. I personally just let it idle about 30 seconds and have plenty of miles with no problems.

Cooker,

I've not done any air intake mods !

I'm taking my EGT temps. pre-turbo in the exhaust manifold.

I've lost the cat. and running a #5 TST plate.

I'm usually below 300 degrees prior to shutting down.

Okay you guys have got me concerned. After driving empty full whatever idle for 1 minute it drops to 360 deggress and holds there 5 minutes later still 350-360. Only time I see 300 is as the gauge is going up from a start. Is my cat plugged? If so does anyone that yanked theirs off want to sell theirs (functioning one of course)?

If you have the AC on it will idle FOREVER before it cools to 300. My local diesel service place told me that almost every turbo failue he sees is caused by LONG TERM improper cool down. He also mentioned 300 as the shut down limit. It stands to reason since oil begins to break down not too far above that.

He doesent read TDR either and thinks we're all nuts for buying cam plates!

I have the Command Start,

It waits for the heaters to cycle if needed, then starts. For shutdown, you can push one button on remote, turn off key and it will run for your pre-programmed time(mine is 15 min.

It also can be set to start at a temp. you pick and run for the time you pick. I am very pleased with this remote.

Illflem,

I have a good friend who is a diesel mechanic on the big rigs. I told him the salesman at Dodge said these "new" diesels didn't need all the special warmup and shutdown that the old ones did. My friend about had a cow. Primarily the problem is that oil burns at 400 degrees, so if the engine stops with the turbo temp above that, some amount of oil will be sitting in that turbo burning up because it's not circulating.

600 degrees sounds pretty scary to me, but if you always do a 30 second cool down, you should easily be ok. I have the ISSPRO TTM and even with a 300 degree (preturbo) shutdown, it never runs for more than 30 seconds unless I've REALLY been running it hard.
