I am considering installing a remote starter in my 5 spd are there any known problems I should know about? Will it have any effect on my ECM?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a remote start in my 5spd. There was a switch for a diesel, so it would wait a few seconds after it turns the ignition on for the heaters. It doesn't affect any engine computers. My only problem is I need to remember to leave the shifter in neutral. I have yet to find a switch that will tell the remote brain that it is in gear. I've heard horror stories about cars driving into things because the person pushed the button and it was gear. If you have info on a switch can you let me know.

Can you tell us more, please? What brand and model # of remote start do you have? Did it come with that delayed-start switch, or did the installer customize it for you?

I have a clifford unit for about 450 at best buy, security remote start, and keyless entry. Lots of nice features, I have an auto, so I don't have to worry about the gears, Best Buy techs said to simply install another relay that causes the box to wait for that light to go out. They knew what they were doing and installed it for free. I love it. Oh, and for the long idle time problem, it only runs for 12 min. until I get the cold weather stuff working, then I can change the time on it.

Oh model # is clifford Matrix RS2.

My remote start has an alarm and remote door locks plus an extra button for windows or what ever you want to use it for. (electric tonnue cover) The companies name is TRC. A person I work with has a friend that owns a stereo shop and he gets them for all his friends for about $65 dollars. It also has heavy duty relays built into it so you don't have to buy extra relays. The delay for the diesel is just a dip switch on the unit. I put it in myself, so it didn't cost me. But there is a lot of wires.

The remote start unit I am considering is an Utra 3500. Range is up to 4000 ft (advertised) and the way they get around the stick shift is a shutdown routine. First put the gear lever in neutral then depress the park brake and finally touch the service brake. Once all this is done turn off the ignition (the engine keeps on running) climb out of the truck (engine still running) and close the door. At this point the engine stops. This guarantees the shifter is in neutral. Now the truck can be started remotely as many times as you want until the driver’s door is unlocked. At this point the remote start is disabled.

This is a new design so I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard of this unit.

I would appreciate any issues I should be looking for.

Thanks.

I have had many alarms on many vehicles, the ULTRA is the best one I have ever seen or used. When my truck comes in, this will be the one I will buy! Oh, I am an electrician by trade if that matters when a opinion is needed.

If I'm not mistaken I think Cobra bought Clifford, I have one in each of my vehicles, I have had a few problems with the Clifford (driving down the Highway and the engine dies and all the electrical components) rolling to a stop in the brake down lane and after troubleshooting the problem and smacking the alarm box a couple of times everything comes back up= loose connection internally, not a good feeling when it happens.

Oh, by the way, I love my remote start. Cool truck in the summer:D and warm truck in the winter:D WHAT! it gets a little cool in South FLA. in the winter:D :D

Wifey's Landcruiser has a remote starter... ... ... ... . ME! ;)

I considered a remote for the CTD, but my neighbors would probably shoot me if I fired the Mighty Cummins and left it running at 0530 every morning. :D

edit: DANG!... . I gotta start proofreading!, where's my spellcheck?
