Remote tire sensors

If I read correctly, the in-cab monitor will fit in a 2" guage pod. I am thinking of putting one on my pillar mount along with EGT and boost. I e-mailed for info and prices, but haven't heard back yet. This one only monitors pressure, and I have seen other systems that also monitor temp. The temp sensor system, however, requires removing the tire from the wheel to mount the sensor. These look like they just replace the valve stem covers. If they save damage from one blowout, not to mention wrecking the truck and trailer, they would pay for themselves really quick.



Any input or experience with either system would be appreciated.

Tire Sentry gave me a price of under $800 for a system that would monitor 18 tires. That is the only system that will monitor my 14 tire rig. It only monitors pressure but is very easy to install and fits a 2 inch pod. The sensors replace the valve caps and are adjustable. The Smart Tire looks very good, measures temperature as well, but is more expensive expensive and requires that the wheels be removed and the tires broken down for the installation of the band on the rim. Either system will give you piece of mind. I have been pulling RVs for almost 30 years and have had five tires go. Five too many but luckily no damage. I will definitely be putting one of these on my rig in the not too distant future.

Wow, Casey, I never added up your tires before! With your tandem dually 5ver, you've got a whole dually pickup's worth more tires than I do pulling my 5ver with my SRW :--)



I guess that makes the per-tire part of the cost equation pretty significant, eh? (of course, I do have both the 5ver and the flatbed monitored, so that's twelve, but not rolling together as a single rig... )

Casey... How does your double dually handle tight corners and jacknifing? Do the tires scrub very bad? We have 3 singles under our trailer, and they scrub real bad when trying to jacknife into a spot or turning around tightly.

It handles sharp corners and jacknifing very well. The axles are very close together with just over 2 inches of space between the tires at their closest point. The front and rear springs are mounted on prefabricated mounting assemblies that are welded to the frame and there is a huge reinforcing rod that runs between the MorRyde equalizer boxes from one side to the other. Since the wheel base is no longer than a normal tandem axle the forces on the tires themselves during tight turns are no greater. The scrubbing forces are probably less because the weight is distributed among 8 tires rather than four (tandem axle) or 6 (triple axle). I think that most people ordering Newmars that come standard with triples go over the the tandem dually option for that reason.
