HELP, how do I get this darn thing out? it looks like it is inserted from the vacuum pump end and not the powersteering pump end. I unbolted the two half inch bolts holding the back of the pump on, and I see the orange o-ring, but how do I get the seal out? I am sure now that it is leaking and not the pump.

all you have to do is unbolt from vacum pump and unbolt it from power steering pump that will leave you with the adapter that has the seal in it. best of luck i replaced mine twice and still cant get it to stop leaking.

vacuum pump seal removal

I removed the adapter from the back of the vac. pump and can see the inside of the pump, vanes and all. the adapter has a flat surface and then a cavity and the drive dog in the cavity. the part of the adapter that the power steering pump slides in has a lip that keeps the seal from coming out towards the power steering side of the adapter. looks like the seal goes only comes out one way, towards the cavity inside the adapter. is this correct?

you are correct the seal will only come out one way,if i can remember right it is the side that bolts to the power steering it will drive out farly easy i used a socket to re-install and take out

I don't think I am looking at this the right way. I currently have only two pieces. the ps pump and the vacuum pump. if I unbolt the back of the vacuum pump, obviously I now have three pieces. it is this third piece that has the seal in it, as well as the drive cross. I got the seal out, but to re-install it, it will have to pass over a lip that was meant to retain it. this can't be the correct way to install it. it looks like there is a bushing that comes out of the third piece. this bushing contains the seal. but how do I get that bushing out, with out damaging the drive cross?

OK, I knocked out the bushing with a socket and found the other o-ring and the correct way to remove the seal. thanks for the help. I will go to the bearing house tomorrow, since today is a holiday. you you had replaced yours several times, because it's still leaking? I hope I don't have the same problem. some seals can be a bit particular.
