OK here it is a beautiful day in Colorado and I'm set up to install the probe on the EGT gauge (pre-turbo) and It's just not a-happening :) After reading all postings I decided to remove the turbo as oppose to grease and magnet ... ... ..... cause "it is suppose to be easy" Well, The top two nuts I can get to but as for the bottom (underside) 2, you have to have 4' arms and even then there is no way to turn a wrench. I'm about ready to just do the grease on bit routine but thought I would say "Morning" to ya all and see if you can shed some light this way.

Thanks! Cliff

turn wrench

When I changed the turbo the bottom 2 bolts were a pain in the butt. I think that I had to take a box wrench and I could only get a 1/8th of a turn and then turn the box wrench over. It was VERY slow in doing it. Don't forget that you should replace the gasket at the turbo. Eric

I just did the same thing with a post pyro on a 2002 auto. NO WAY to get the drill into the cast elbow, so just take the elbow off right? YEAH RIGHT. Did the 1/8 turn on the manifold bolts thing. The cast elbow to the turbo end actually was not bad.

Got it out, drilled it, tapped it, pyroed it, got it back in.

I put high temp anti seize on the bolts though so next time it MIGHT be easier.

what I did with my 02 HO when putting in the pre turbo sensor was place an ordinary chunk of magnet (like you fine at sears in the tool dept) and put it on the manifold next to the drill bit. That held most of the shavings. Then I used a small extendable magnetic retriver (about the size of a ball piont pen, also from sears) and stuck that in the hole to get the rest. No problems to date.

Just use a magnet or nothing...

Thats my recommendation. Either use a small magnet, or if you don't have one, just drill it, tap it, and get on with life. I did it like that and so have numerous friends, no problems to date. A lot of the "removing the turbo" stuff is bull. I have never heard of any problems leaving it on.

I personally went to sears and bought a pretty large 15mm Craftsman wrench to get them bottom two bolts out when I replaced my turbo. Boy does the leverage on the long wrench help.

As far as drilling and tapping the manifold. Personally I wouldn't worry about taking the turbo off. Just drill the manifold and when you think you are close, just clean off all of the shavings. Keep doing this minimizing the amount that can go inside. Once you break through the manifold, just be very thorough and patient with the magnet. It honestly is a very easy process.

Shoot me a PM if you need help. I'd be more then happy to help out as much as I can.

I did mine yesterday. I went from post to pre and the pre install went easier. This is what I did. Before breaking through the manifold, wipe off the shavings and dip the drill bit in grease, that will hold most of the shavings. Then I used a 1/4" wide by about 8" long magnet strip and split it in half to make it thinner, and took out any left over shavings. Do the same for the tap. I like the magnet strip because it's flexable and it reaches the ports and down into the turbo. Took me about 30 minutes.

I used a magnet on a flexable shaft. The shaft/handle is one of those 'wire wound' types & allowed the magnet to get way down into the turbo.

Drilled, Tapped ...ready to pull!

Hi all ! Just wanted to say Thanks for all the help as I got the probe installed last night! I decided to leave the dang turbo alone and like you all said ... use the magnet, take my time and be patient :) The install went smoothly and the patient is doing great ! I plan to hook up the 5th wheel for Memorial weekend so I'll give it a good workout. Thanks again and have a fun & safe Holiday weekend ! Cliff
