HI All,

Both of my work trucks are not working... .

I don't know if it is the lack of lubricity in the new low sulphur fuels but two of my trucks have recently started having trouble turning off... I. E. the little plunger that shuts the fuel off does not always turn the truck off with the key so I have to manually flip the lever on the pump to shut it off... This isn't necessarily the end of the world BUT sometimes the fuel cut off plunger will shut the truck off BUT stick in the closed position and not allow the truck to start... THAT is a big problem... especially when it happens far from home.

Given that, I had the local shop removed the guts on the electric fuel shut off plunger and use a regular choke cable to pull the fuel shut off lever.

The removal of the guts solved the problem on one of my trucks (the 1989) so I decided to have the removal procedure done to my other work truck (a 1991)...

As fate would have it, the 1991 was on a job and refused to start before having the removal procedure done... . The mechanic that removed the guts on the fuel cut off solenoid on my 1989 truck was nice enough to ride out and get the 1991 running.

We took the truck back to the shop (no problems once he got it running), the mechanic removed the guts as he had done on the 1989 and even went a little further and changed out the fuel filter too.

I went to get the truck BUT now the truck won't run much above idle despite manually moving the throttle... . even as far as wide open!

The truck starts and idles fine but won't make any appreciable RPMs... . NO smoking or rough running... . just won't build RPMs.

I thought maybe air in the system BUT since it runs smoothly can I rule this out?... . The mechanic said he bled everything.

The injector pump was replaced not too long back on this truck (1991)... .

Weird thing is the truck ran fine getting back to the shop before the guts were removed (electric plunger parts removed) and fuel filter changed out now the truck is not usable... .

Any Ideas on why no RPM's?... .

Please help since now BOTH my work trucks are dead in the water (In all fairness tho the 1989 does run OK but the new replacement Jasper transmission just gave out... . AARG).

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Check to make sure the cable is allowing the lever to move all the way back to "on. " If not, it's choking the fuel supply. Other than that, I'd have to say the mechanic left something in the shutoff assembly bore, causing blockage, there could be air in the system, or your lift pump is weak. Air in the top of the pump can be there for a few minutes, if your lift pump is weak. Of course, I'm not real experienced in working on these pumps. There's a guy, Cerebrusium, I think is his name, you might PM him and ask him, he's pretty sharp on the VE pumps. He's had his apart more times than anyone I know.

As for the transmission, you might look into Blumenthal's NV4500 conversion. They're a little tougher transmission behind the Cummins, IMO.

HI,

Thanks for the help / suggestions... . I spoke w/ the mechanic today and he claimed he would look into the possibility that something fell into the open part of the pump when he gutted it out to make the truck a manual shut off only... . I did check lever and it was all the way open so the fuel in theory should be flowing.

I will try to PM Cerebrusium also regarding this.

The mechanic said he would also call the local truck repair place (mainly they work on big rigs BUT hopefully they may have some ideas.

Thanks for the input so far.

I'm with HHhuntitall, I think a piece of the rubber stopper is in a pump orfice blocking fuel flow, or, its in the linkage and jammed the rack closed. Either is a possibility.

The other thing to check is the pin in the aneroid that controls low boost fuel. If they jam from the oring deteriorating or just a bad fuel reaction then no throttle.

Oh yeah, sorry you bought into the Jasper hype. They are junk for a diesel. Find a local shop that knows 727's and you will be far better off.

Ask the shop to fix it right this time. And explain that the down time is costly to you. it drove in fine then they worked on the pump now it won't drive. Hmmm. Its not your job to diagnose or repair that's what you paid them for. Is it routine for them to fix something then it not run well enough to leave the parking lot? I don't want to sound cynical but I'm suspect about the quality of work iffen they gots to call the big rig shop.

Jasper does have a good warranty on their products. Are you still in the warranty period and have you checked with them about the possibility of a loaner or rental being covered?

HI,

Just a follow up..... the shop has the pump apart and is looking to see if they can find any debris..... I always knew there were a lot of parts inside but wow... I just hope they get it all back together without left over parts!

As far as the Trans on my 1989, it is under warranty so they are having another one shipped to their shop... . I am using friends gashog dually now..... I miss diesel MPGs... . I think the gasser gets about 6 MPG in town pulling the trailer... . wow.

Thanks for all the help so far... . I'll keep everybody posted as to the outcome in case this can be of help to others in the future.
