I was attempting to remove my exhaust elbow today, and while I was able to get the lower (exhaust-side) clamp loose, the top one (turbo-side) was quite firmly attached to the turbo.

Latest issue of the TDR says to "carefully pry the clamp loose". Those of you who have installed an exhaust brake, did you have any trouble breaking the clamps loose? Any advice?

Clamp removal

Where the clamp is split start to pry with a flat blade screw driver of significant strength after the bolt is released and once it pops work your way around the clamp.

Mine was also happy right where it was at. I used a little screw driver to get under it just alittle. Once it popped loose, it was still a butch to get off. It was even more of a butch to get back on. But I didn't remove the fender liner. I wanted to do it the hard way!

elbow clamp removal

Well, it's like Steve said, it is much easier with the wheel and wheel well liner removed. Mine only had about 3,500 miles on them and they were determined that they were going to be with the truck for the rest of it's natural life. Just work a small screwdriver or a awl in there after you have loosened the screw and it will pop out, Mine went back on much easier than they cam off, maybe it was all the penetrating oil or the threat of physical violence, but they were on in less than five minutes.

Well, I got them both off! That turbo-side clamp actually came off a little easier than I thought it might. As Steve reported, I had difficulty getting the elbow re-installed. A real PITA. Took 10 minutes to remove the elbow, and 1 hour to install it.

But it's done, and now I have a post-turbo EGT reading (for shutdown purposes). :)
