Has anyone sucessfully removed the fan clutch with a 36mm wrench and a screwdriver? I tried wedging a screwdriver through the pulley bolts to hold it, but none of my 20+ screwdrivers fit very well. One slip, and something on my arm or hand is going to run into the fan blades. Don't they sell/rent something to hold that pulley? (yeah, I know the threads are left handed)

have you tried smacking the crap out of the wrench? this gets most of the bmws i work on daily and got my truck, a easily made tool like this gets the over tightened ones

That's what I'm going to have to make to hold the pulley. I race sports cars, and thought I had every screwdriver known to man. But for the life of me I couldn't find one that worked well. several were close, but one slip and I'm going to cut the heck out of my hand. was hoping the local parts stores rented something like that, to save me having to grind/drill my stock of steel. thanks.

I made up a wrench similar to the one pictured except that it fits over 5 of the bolt heads.

The Haynes manual says to use a large pair of water pump pliers which didn't appeal to me at all.

Why are you taking it off?? If for the KDP or other repairs just take the four bolts out of the fan pulley bracket and take the fan, shroud, and bracket out all at once. This tends to be better done with a couple x-tra hands. Oh, and to get to the fourth bolt halfway hidden by the pulley, just grind down a 10mm box-end wrench until it fits in there and wa-la!!
