Just put an aftermarket hood on the truck with the insulation from the old one. I know that some years didn't have insulation from the factory.

So my question is for those who have done it. Does it make it more noisy? Is there really any reason for it to be there?

Oh, by the way the new hood is a open performance cowl type hood, so if I took the insulation off air would rush down into the engine compartment.

I think I already know my answer after voicing (posting) this. :D

I always yank them off... that stuff ends up getting all nasty and chewed up and hangs down, so I generally pre-empt that and just remove it and trash it... on whatever car I've got...

yanked it off my '91... can't remember if my '97 had one, but if it did, I yanked it off the day I got it! LOL!

I was actually hoping the engine noise would be LOUDER (I'm sick, I know) I noticed no change.

I live in the sticks and have a big mice problem. Mice started chewing holes in it and making homes everywhere inside the engine compartment including in between the liner and the hood itself. I had to remove nests inside the airbox daily. After lifting the hood one day and hearing a bunch of dog food rolling around I ripped the insulation out. The truck is always parked outside in the sun and I tow heavy in some bigtime heat. I notice no extra noise, no extra hot hood or bubbling paint- nothing. The mice problem went away too!

I did notice a slight change in the noise level after removing the insulation. I also have a ram air hood and am going to box the underside and direct the air to the Scotty II type of air intake housing I will build for the custom filter that AFE is building for my truck.

Want it really quiet???

Sell it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(
Not a chance. ;) If I did I couldn't pull myself up to spend the kind of money it takes to get another one. Since I have bought this I have realised how stupid it was for me to spend 40000 on a full size truck for a daily driver when I work in the Seattle Metropolitan area. I can count the number of garage that will fit my truck on one hand in the whole downtown area. So this one will have to do. Live and learn.
