removing oil pan

I have a quick question about removing the oil pan to change out the gasket, maybe someone can help. Just looking at the pan, it doesn't look like it will drop out once unbolted. So my question is will it dop a little, enough to clear the bell housing, and slide right out? Any comments? thanks.

Based on my experience on pulling my engine I would say no, but check with Dodge as they can look it up for you. There is not much room to lift up either. Shadrach

I checked with dodge and they did say i would have to lift the motor a few inches to clear the cross member, but they would be glad to do it for me for 800. 00, no thanks ill do it myself. shadrach I do thank you for the reply. I am looking foward to jumping into the task.

It will come out but you have to lift the engine as high as possible and drop the pick up tube inside the pan. It isn't the most fun of jobs, but it can be done if you pay attention and have the tools to safely get the engine up high enough. Be careful not to bend/break the fan, radiator, or A/C hoses.

FSM says 4x2 requires trans removal, but I think it will still come out if the engine is raised high enough. The trans comes out pretty easy on a 4x2 so it still might be faster and easier to get it out of the way.

Sag2 thanks for the info. we will pay attention to the other stuff while hoisting the motor, thanks for the heads up. It is my buddies 06 4x4 long bed and hes to cheap to get a tdr membership to figure this on his own, but no problem thats what im here for. gonna see what we can do tomorrow. the lastoil pan i did was on a old 74 bronco with a 302, and it was pretty easy, but the cross member on the dodge looks to be a pain in the butt. What about the transmission mounts and drive lines?

Has anyone replaced the oil pan gasket while using an engine hoist to raise the engine instead of the prescribed Miller support fixture (PN 8534)? Since the engine is well up under the dashboard, I am wondering if a regular engine hoist might work.

I need to replace the rear main seal and the pilot bearing and there is one tiny wet spot on the pan gasket. I can't see leaving a pan gasket in place that has 115K miles on it when I already have the trans and clutch out.
