Howdy all.

Is it possible to remove only the seat & leave the arm rest/storage compartment on the 96 style?

I'm making room for radio equipment. I never use the seat cushion, but want to keep the arm rest.

I really don't see a problem doing this. But, you'll probably have to fab up a couple extra brackets.

Wrong, on a 96, the front middle seat back pivots on the bottom seat and the bottom seat cushion is bolted to brackets that are riveted to the two inside front seat brackets that bolt to the floor.

How do I know this? Oo. I removed the center seat years ago to get a 'captains chair' type setup as with the manual 5 speed, anyone sitting in the center better be pretty small when you go for reverse (or that you're intimate with!) and installed a Ford Van Console between the two front seats. The seat unbolts very easily. The brackets had to have the factory rivets drilled out. The console gives me two drink holders, a small catch area and a hinged storage area that houses my remote 10 disc cd player, spare filters, etc.

 ... Can the seat be unbolted w/o having to remove anything?

thanks
Yes - it will leave the four brackets that will be coming off of the two tunnel side front seat bases / brackets.

Unbolts with common hand tools.

My '97 is the same way. How do I know this, I did the same thing. That is where the extra brackets come in. It'll take a little fab work, but it can be done.

Think about replacing the middle seat with a plywood box with an arm rest as part of it. I don't use mine for radios anymore, but the old one had radios, a switch box, and siren. This one is storage for stuff and to support a`computer stand. I'll try to take a picture of it and post it tomorrow (Monday) night to give you some ideas.
