I am working on my bosses 96 5spd CTD. Removing the trans. it has a gearvendor. So for the whole thing to drop out easy, the crossmember needs to be out. I removed all six bolts holding it in. We have beat it with a hammer and jacks, even spread the frame apart just a bit, but we still cannot get it out. Do you guys have any tricks or advice? New to 2g's.

Interesting, I am positive it has only 6 bolts, the crossmember moves all around but not enough to unbind it. I just got off the phone with Pat@BD-Power and he said they always use a frame spreader to pul the crossmember when they are doing autos. So that is the next plan. Thank you for the response, I guess our frame may not be identical this is a 3500 4x2.

If anybody has anymore ideas please let me know.

Did you unbolt and remove the transmission mount? That would give you more room to move the crossmember upwards. Also, try raising the transmission up till it is against the cab. Just watch the engine oil pan towards the front that it doesn't hit that crossmember. I would think with the extra weight of the gearvender unit is pulling the rear down. I had my transfer case off when I removed mine, so there was less weight on the rear. Just gota find that sweet spot where it wiggles out.

Are you talking about the crossmember bolts where it bolts to the frame?? If you are there are 8 bolts 4 on each side and when i do mine i use a porta-power between the frame rails its a bit scarey but it didnt hurt any.

good luck,Michael

Yes, I removed the transmission mount and have jacked the trans up to the cab.

As far as the bolts that hold the crossmember to the frame, my truck has three on each side attaching it to the frame. (can someone with a 4x2 confirm this) But I have moved the crossmember around propably 4 inches or so. I just cannot get it to move up enough to free up. I am waiting on the porta-power, I will check back.

OK I am a retard!! A blind one at that! I found that the fourth bolts. Thanks for sticking firm guys!!! I will remove those and check back.

Thank you every body.

Gives you an idea of how greasy this thing is underneath!!

I am replacing the headgasket right now as well, things are going good with that whole job.

Well I got it out without the porta-power easily, I will use it to put it back in if I have any trouble. It goes very smooth whith all the bolts removed.

Thankyou everybody.
