Its time to clean and re-oil the Amsoil air filter for the first time. It says on the oil bottle to remove the metal frame from the foam before oiling. It looks to me like it would ruin the filter if I did that. I'm not sure why it could not be re-oiled with the metal frame intact. Anyone with experience with this?

I once owned the Amsoil filter and ran into the same deal , what I did was I carefully cut the foam away from the metal and then cleaned and oiled the foam then carefully installed the thing back into the box, that being hindsite I offer these 2 items.

1) do not cut it apart but clean it as a whole and re oil

2)Although I like and use Amsoil products I would recommend to give it away and get a BHAF, you will be happier

I bought one of those five gallon tubs a walmart(for storing things in) They come with a lid , about 4 or 5 bucks. I use air filter cleaner to break down the oil, then I use hot soapy water, dip the filter in and out of the tub, then with the plams of your hands squish the filter flat against the bottom of the tub several times. Then do the same with rinse water, works great. I get the foam filter cleaner and foam filter oil (both in spray cans) at the motorcycle races. I like the spray oil much better than botteled oil, check your local cycle shops for KLOTZ oil and cleaner, Hope this helps. John

I have cleaned and re-oiled mine twice now. I do not remove the foam from the cage. Simply throw in hot water with dishwashing liquid or Simple Green. Press down repeatedly in all areas of the filter until oil is emulsified. Pull filter from water and drain. You won't believe how much dirt is in the water. Rinse with hot water and repeat washing process until wash water is no longer dirty.

Allow to thoroughly air dry before oiling.

When oiling, use a generous amount of oil. This is a very effective filter, but only if it is properly oiled. I have found the oil to have an extremely tacky consistency, I have NOT had any oil on my compressor blades. It makes it into the first two inches or so of the turbo hose, but thats it.

It is a very effective filter. My last oil analysis showed a silicon reading of only 4ppm. The truck was driven in very dusty conditions. Good luck with your filter.

Doh, there's INSTRUCTIONS on the little bottle?? :p LOL, I've cleaned my Amsoil filter at least 5-6 times, and have never noticed any instructions!!

When reoiling I use about 1. 5-2 teaspoons of the tacky stuff and the inkate has been clean as a whistle. I have gradually decreased the amount of oil since a little goes a long ways.

I would prefer a BHAF except it would clog up so fast around here I'd always be replacing them. My Amsoil filter is chocked right now and I need to clean it, it was only 4000 miles ago since I did it last time. The air is so full of dust and crud here in the desert.

When cleaning the Amsoil filter DO NOT REMOVE THE FOAM FROM THE WIRE MESH! The instructions you are reading are for a different type of filter element. Clean it in a flat bottom plastic pan useing only HOT WATER AND A MILD DETERGENT SOAP such as dish soap. When the water gets fairly clean rinse in hot water, then allow the filter to air dry outside. When dry re-oil using the foam oil, but do not saturate the foam. One 8 oz. bottle will re-oil the Dodge filter 4-5 times!

Make sure it is dry before re-oiling!
