I finished the replacement of the sender and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I needed to remove a jury rigged goose neck hitch mount that had been welded onto the frame; so I pulled the bed off the truck and killed two birds. The fuel module needed cleaning, the strainers were gummed up with jelly.
If any of you haven't pulled your module out, you may want to check it for crud.

PS The retaining ring on the module was only on loosely and the dirt on the top of the tank was fuel stained, may be why my milage has been down, we'll see. And while I was at it, I removed the green ball out of the fill pipe, I bet She'll take some fuel now.
