Is it possible to replace the bearings on the A/C compressor or is it too much trouble? Replaced the idler pulley and belt and was still making noise then I shot a little WD-40 behind the pulley on the comp, and it stopped. The clutch and air still work, would like to try and fix it before something tears up.

Thanks. .

Yes, it is possible. If the clutch is worn or you have high miles on the unit you might want to just replace the whole clutch. The clutch plate is held in place by a bolt in the center. It should come off fairly easy. The bearing is in the pulley of course and is secured by a snap ring, the pulley may require a small puller to remove. If you have clearance to do this in place you won't have to remove the refrigerant. bg

So if I go ahead and get a new clutch they usually come with new clutch, pulley and bearing? And that would fix a squeeky comp?

It's easy to replace the whole clutch assembly on your A/C compressor. Follow these steps:

Get model # off compressor and use it to order a clutch assembly from your choice of supply house. Napa maybe, but probably not Autozone or Advance. I could be wrong about that. I use a local place that sells big truck parts. They can get most any A/C part straight from the manufacturer without having to go through a dealer.

1. Unbolt compressor from bracket and hang it down for access to clutch. Support it so that the hoses don't hold the weight.

2. Remove nut on outside of clutch.

3. Use 3 bolt puller to remove outer clutch plate. Bolt holes will probably be 1/4-20.

4. Remove electromagnet. It will be held on by a snap ring... I think.

5. Unbolt backing plate from front compressor housing.

I think that's pretty close. Put it back the way it came off. I think there are 2 snap rings... one big one small, but I can't remember exactly where. Just be gentle and the puller is the only special tool you'll need.
