Adding a vacuum gage to boost line to check for leak...?

My 07 5. 9 is taking longer crank times mostly when the engine is already warm. Sometimes in the morning on the first start it takes longer to crank as well. From what I have read this is due to failing injectors. I was wondering if just replacing the tips would solve this problem or if I need to replace the whole injector body? Or could this be caused from something else besides the injectors? My truck has 116k on it. Im also running a Smarty on SW9. (I know whoever is reading this is probably cringing about the SW9). I keep a good eye on the pyro guage tho (I get out of the throttle at or before 1200). I have the injection timing and rail pressure settings set on mild in the program. Thanks in advance!!!

Our shop experience is that it is best to go with the new bodies as well as replacing the nozzles because of two reasons. There was an update to the injector bodies to help the check ball seats, and since you have multiple shots of fuel from the injectors for each compression stroke, the nozzles have 3 to 4 times the wear. 116K is about right, sometimes less when turned up quite a bit. Check the previous articles in the TDR for several great injector write-ups, as there are now many different options out there for you, from stock to major HP increases, depending upon what you're looking for.

BTW, how do you like your Suncoast transmission?

Best wishes!

That makes sense for the wear on the nozzles, I never thought about that. I love the suncoast transmission except for the shifting. I had a shift kit installed when it was built and it does shift hard into overdrive. I have been meaning to take it in and have the line pressure reduced and see if that helps. Other than that it has served me well. I can light up the tires on dry pavement off a red light!! I had it installed in April of last year and have put about 20k on it and havent had any issues with it at all. Thats almost all highway driving with a few full throttle take offs and highway passes in there. What is a good reliable injector you would recommend??? I would like to go with industrial injection or something but theyre so damn expensive. Is there a cheaper alternative that is comperable to something like them??

Definitely change both. In fact, the check ball and seat, or a cracked body, will be the usual failure. The nozzles fail when using dirty fuel or homebrews such as used motor oil or home-made "bio" diesel.

adding higher flow rate nozzles to used/worn bodies will only reveal the extent of the wear... . it will NOT help the long crank cycle

Yeah, and the chances of getting the WTS and 10 chimes sky rocket. :(

TC Diesel is where I would get them from, Genuine Cummins New preferred but you might have to settle for the reman if he doesn't have new.

In about two hours of labor, you can have your injector cross tubes re-torqued to spec (37/39 ft lbs), may solve your long crank times and buy you a few K more miles before having to replace the injectors...

FYI, the new TQ spec, especially on used tubes, is 41-42 ft lbs. A dab to Thread Locker Blue on the retainer nut is also highly recommended to stop loosening over time.

Thanks cerb! I guess I have been told or heard that, but forgot. If replacing injectors I would opt for new cross tubes also, but that's just me. Jess
