I busted the spider gears in my factory limited slip unit the other day while doing a burnout.

If its going to cost me $585 to rebuild it (kit from quad4x4.com), should I just install a Detroit locker?

This truck is probably not going to see much offroad use any more, but as far as strength, would a detroit be stronger?

Are there any good sources for online Ls units or lockers?

Thanks

What is the truck being used for? You say that it is not going to be used off-road much anymore which is the main reason that most people go to a locked rear.

The detroit will be stronger but that will bring other problems with it. If you are putting down enough power to break a limited slip, you are seriously taxing your whole drive train. Lockers put a lot of stress on axle shafts. I would be worried that going to a locker would cause you to start breaking other components.

That being said, the best mechanical locker out there is a detroit. You will definitely wear out your tires faster and decrease your mileage slightly.

The detroit locker is definately stronger than the factory power-lok. Like it was said above, other component failure might fall victim to it, especially with the five-speed. You will definately notice a driveability difference as well. I personally like the Detroit Lockers in these trucks. The performance off-road is worth it.
