Hi all, I am needing to replace my front brakes soon and I am upgrading the pads to the EBC yellow stuff pads. Should I change the rear as well? I know for the most part that you don't have to but since I am upgrading to the yellow stuff pads, should I do the rear as well? I had them check while at the dealer the offer day and the fronts are at 30% and the rears they said are ok, they didn't give me a percentage.

Thanks, Corey

How many miles ya got on there? My rears were replaced at 96K and the fronts are still original (146. 5K). If they check out OK, I'd leave them.

Of course I know nothing about "EBC yellow stuff pads" so if the braking characteristics are that much different maybe a change would be in order.

BTW, when I got new tires 5K ago, the fronts were still at least 50%.

Most of the time, front brakes do 65 - 70% of the braking action... . this might vary based on the load or trailer tongue weight in the bed... . Since all these trucks have ABS brakes I'd suggest that you put the same friction on both axles at once... .

Our 04 pulling a 22K lb trailer most of the time went 160K before we needed to do the brakes and at that time we had to overhaul the calipers because of the dirt behind the boots... You need to inspect this area carefully and don't let anyone just put pads on and compress the pistons pushing the old brake fluid back into the master cylinder...

I was in a dealer operation and watched them do just that... . as a quick way of putting pads on... . said it was no problem... It wasn't my vehicle and I can tell you that my comments to the service manager wasn't good... . he just shrugged me off... but I haven't been back since... .

Hope this helps...

I have 76,000 miles on the brakes. The dealer told me that the back were ok but didn't give me a percentage of the wear. On all my other trucks I just changed the front and had no problems.

My daughter took her Yukon into the dealer for an oil change... . the dealer said the front brake pads were low and needed to be changed..... she called me and I sent her a set of pads and bet her $10 that her Yukon had over 70% of the pads left and the dealer was full of it... . She took it to a friend..... she's 6 hours from me... . the guy looked at it and guessed that she had 75% left on all wheels... . She confronted the dealer who tried to back pedal... . she did send me the $10. 00... ... . And later put the pads on about 100K miles later... .

Don't believe all your told...

I never did find the all the pads in the yellow stuff style. I could only find the front ones but not the rears. I ended going with the green stuff pad, I found the front and rear pads and they have seemed to be pretty good.

Brakes are the biggest money maker for a shop... most of the price is labor since the parts are cheap... and it is simple work.

The shop my former company used would replace brakes at every yearly inspection on every vehicle we sent him... and this wasn't cheap... the rotors were replaced or turned everytime, the pads replaced, and the calipers replaced EVERYTIME. That was until I got on the scene... then things changed! He charged around $350 every time. I started replacing the brakes myself (pads only) and I use neversieze on a lot of components... he tried to tell the owner HE changed brakes on the car I sent in... :-laf

I just checked the brakes on my truck the other night, getting ready for state inspection... I have over 50% left front and rear at 114k. I do have a slight pulsing, so the rotors will need touched, but that shouldn't be for another 50k at least. I will be replacing the pads with OE parts when the time comes... I would have replaced the brakes on my 99 over five times by now...
