2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Infinity speaker question

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Headliner Replacement?

We replaced my brother's stereo in his 98 quad cab this evening with a new pioneer CD player. Now for some reason the rear speakers work fine, but the front speakers aren't working. From reading past posts it seems he has the infinity sound system even though it doesn't say it anywhere. Why would the back ones work, but the fronts not?? Also there were the 2 flat plugs (grey and black) and a seperate small square plug. What is that plug for?? :confused:

Justin,

If you can not find anything saying "Infinity", then your brother doesn't have it. The truck that do, have it marked on both side doors, around the area were the tweeter should be. What kind of radio did you replace the factory one with?? Also, it's a little late for you, but anyone else considering such a change, would be wise to use the services of Crutchfield. They include in every order a complete vehicle specific instalation sheet, which covers all the different modles for that same year of truck. They also include the little things like wiring harnesses and speaker adapters. You may save a buck or two elsewhere, but no one givs the complete service Crutchfield offers.

Back to your trucks system. Dodge went thru several changes to the audio systems in their trucks, the '97,'98 and '98 1/2's all had different and complex systems. My '97 had a system that placed seperate small independent amps in each door, along with seperate tweeter feeds and rear speaker mounted amps. In all each door had 16 seperate wires to feed the system, I'm not sure what they were thinking, but someone was screwed up. You must have a simular set-up. Being that there is several different wirings, I would contact someone in the bussness and see if they could help. maybe, crutchfield could give you a hand?? Gabriel of Crutchfield is a wis at these stereo's. You have two plugs left over that oviously you need.

Maybe this will help, it's from my trucks wiring... .

Behind the radio, in the dash there were two (2) plugs that connected to the radio, antena doesn't count.

Plug one

Blue =power antena

Green =left rear speaker +

Violet =Right rear speaker +

White =Left rear speaker +

Grey =Right front speaker +

Green/Black=Left rear speaker -

Violet/Black=Right rear speaker -

Plug two

White/Black=Left front speaker -

Grey/Black =Right front speaker -

Red =12V switched Power

Yellow =12V constant power

Hopefully this will help

My 02 has the Infiniti speaker system & it isn't marked anywhere. When I installed my gauge pillar the tweeter had an Infiniti sticker, but you can't see it unless you remove the speaker.

I have those 2 flat plugs, but there is also 1 small square one with 2 wires I believe. I pulled the door panels on the front doors and each speaker has a big black platic thing next to the magnet. I also pulled the piller and noticed a tweeter with a green "infinity" tag hanging off it. I am replacing the stereo with a new pioneer 4600MP3 player. I have designed and installed many systems back in my highschool and college years, but this one has confused me.

OK, sorry I did not know they made the Infinity stereo without marking them.

The big black things are the independent amps. Don't know about the rest.

Why Dodge got roped into installing such a low sound quality stereo system that is so complicated and expensive (parts and time to install) is beyond me. I bet someone got fired over this set-up?

I have only had mine 2. 5 years & the speakers are starting to sound like crap. I have wanted to add in a stereo system. I was under the impression that wiring harnesses were available to connect aftermarket stereo's to stock stereo systems from places like Crutchfield's.

I have the steering wheel stereo controls & have been trying to find out if they will work with certain stereo's. Haven't received an answer. A coupe of local stereo shops tell me no.

Still searching.

Good luck Justin.

On mine the small square plug only had one wire and it was the ground wire.

Also, since you have the infinity speakers did you hook up the amp signal wire? When I switched an aftermarket radio from a non-infinity truck to one with the infinity speakers, I didn't get any sound out of the speakers until I powered the factory amps.

How would I got about powering the factory amps?? I have all the wires hooked up except for the single wire which is a ground?? Do the rear speakers have a amp because for some reason they are working just fine. :confused:

I bet it's just a hook up problem, I also had '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Infinity system and separate amps and steering wheel controls. I replaced the head unit with an Alpine by using one of those handy little install kits that have the vehicle mating plug already attached and wired. All I had to do was match up the wires to my new Alpine. Everything worked fine, you will however lose the steering wheel controls. Those are on a data bus that is proprietary to the OEM. Some aftermarket decks have a remote control and you can purchase a little IR sender thingy that you mount in the headliner that will interface with the steering wheel controls. Sounded a little cheesy and expensive to me though. Anyway, get the harness and you should be fine, good luck.

Justin,

I have hear of some models that have a amp hidden behind the dash, that powers the speakers, but your truck sounds like it has the independent small amps attached to the speakers. These amps are no good with replacement speakers, they are junk to begin with, but are not reusable.

Pioneer make three radios for the Dodge vehicles, they are all 1. 5 din models that fit perfectly into the dash with out spacers, adapters or fillers. They also offer a steering wheel controller that allows volume,track and a few other functions to be made from the convenience of the steering wheel. I went with the Pioneer DEH-P77DH head unit, and the CDX-P1280 12 disk CD unit also from Pioneer. The hook-up was straight forward, but I did not use the rear factory speaker wires, only the fronts. My adapters from Crutch field plugged right in and work flawlessly. In the front door I went with the Polk Audio 6. 5" compo nit speakers and in the rear the 5. 25" Polk Audio. I used a Sony amp to drive everything, the result was a very clean sounding system. While I had the cab apart, I also added huge amounts of Dynamat and Coolit sound deadening materials, well worth the time and expense.

Good luck on your present installation.

Yeah I figured that the amps were crap and not reuseable. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some secret wire that powers the amps and makes it all work. I told my brother to go buy some 6. 5's and we'll replace them tonight.

I just replaced my speakers with Nakamichis re-using the amps. Zip ties and electrical tape made it happen, when you get the speakers out unscrew the torx and reattach to your replacement speakers. Sound a lot better but the rear speakers on mine have no amps!

When I find a good DIN 1. 5 I'll replace the head unit.

Now, after reading the posts, does the Crutchfield adapters interface with the Infinity amps in the doors? If so I feel a creative streak coming on.

Do the infinity amps use a high level input or low level? I've wired more than one Bose system that needed a line drop or converter (several options for this). That would be the #1 problem with re-using them with the new head unit. If you feed the amps high level sound they will sound insanely bad. If you keep the amps (for anyone who reads this as reference) use the Blue wire with the white stripe for the remote turn on/power on.

You can install an aftermarket head unit and still maintain use of the amps and the OEM speakers. It has been a while since I tore into a 98+ with the Infinity system but I don't think I had to do anything special for this, I will check to see if I made any notes.

I do know that if you want to install aftermarket speakers and remove the OEM spekers w/ the attached amplifiers you will have to figure out the wiring to get the OEM tweeters to still work. I wrote the wiring diagram down so if you need help with this just let me know.

HELLO. .

I have a 98 Dodge Ram with the Infinity system,,of course the front speakers are blown.

I bought a set of INFINITY speakers but they were 4 Pin connectors an mine are 6 Pin.

Any one got any ideas on how to convert?

I had some OLD speaker an tried to jump the contacts to see if I could get to work,,but three differant wires gave me SOUND!!... Just wondering if one pin or color wire is best for hooking up to after market speakers??

THANKS

Mike
